Many people have been condemned of witch craft and are going to be hanged if they do not confess. John was put in jail for witch craft like his wife already was. Reverend Hale left the court because of all of the people who were condemned and were already hanged. Hale came back to ask Elizabeth to persuade John to confess so that he would live and not be hanged. Elizabeth was able to talk to John her husband alone. She persuaded John to confess of witch craft. John tells his confession of witch craft to the court. They wrote Johns confession down and had him
Mary Warren has to explain what the whole spiel with the coma and dancing in the woods was about. John Proctor was the connection between that for when he forced Mary to promise on her life that the dancing was the practice of witchery and to explain it in front of the court. Throughout the story John has hell thrown at him in all directions, but somehow he stays just the brink of insanity only going above that line when Abigail lost in court. John did have an affair with Abigail which he soon confessed about in court.
1692 had been a deranged time for the Puritans living in the village of Salem Massachusetts. When a group of girls were discovered dancing around a fire in the forest things began to take a turn for the worst. Accusations from these girls started to rip this village apart when most of the Puritans were believed to be partaking in the act of witchcraft. Abigail, the girl leading the others, told the court that Elizabeth Proctor was infact a witch in the hope of getting John Proctor to love her once again. This mistake of lechery haunts John throughout the entirety of the play.
During the 1690's there was a period of time in the village of Salem know as the Salem Witch Trials. This was where people of the village were getting accused of witch craft and being taken captive till either confessing or they were killed. Was all this true? John Procter was a man during this that lived in Salem, he was once who loved Abigail Williams, while he already had a wife. Was he a good man for this or not?
Arthur Miller, a playwright, wrote The Crucible, a dramatized and fictionalized play. The setting took place in Salem, Massachusetts, during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. The play is about the witch trials, which started due to the jealousy and lust of Abigail Williams, the leader of the witchcraft trial, wanting to have John Proctor, the main protagonist, again. At the end of the play, Proctor is led to his hanging. Throughout the play, there are many events that had helped him made his decision.
The Crucible In the story, “The Crucible” John Proctor’s most important concern is his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. John says he only wants to please Elizabeth and is doing all he can to make her happy. He is trying to make up for committing adultery with Abigail when Abigail was working for Elizabeth. In Act two John yells at his wife for suspecting that he did things with Abigail that day he was alone with her. Even though John did at one point have feelings for Abigail, throughout the rest of the story he only worries about what happens to his family and his wife.
Religion is a fundamental part of life. This especially holds true to John Hale from Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible. When Hale first arrived to Salem he has the intention to cleanse the village of all evils and to bring it back to its former peace. When the courts of Massachusetts comes to serve the King’s justice, they would do so only by accepting evidence that the people favored. This caused Hale to question the credibility of the court.
The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller. He wrote the play in 1952 and it was first performed January 22, 1953. Throughout the play Reverend Hale undergoes changes. At the beginning of the play, Hale is contacted by Reverend Parris because Parris believes witchcraft has come to Salem.
John gives Hale information that helps urge him to question the court and the truth. What finally puts Hale over the edge to believing is that he finds out Rebecca Nurse has been accused of witchcraft and killing eight babies. “I am a stranger here, as you know. And in my ignorance I find it hard to draw a clear opinion of them that come accused before the court. And so this afternoon, and now tonight, I go from house to house - I come now from Rebecca Nurse’s house and -” (Miller, 198).
John confesses to adultery in court to try to save Elizabeth when she is accused of witchcraft. By doing this, he is confessing to a serious sin. In this society, the church and government are one. This means that he could face a death sentence. He also confesses prove Abigail’s motive to kill Elizabeth and to expose her and save others from being accused by her.
Admitting one’s mistakes in today’s society appears to be too hard to make. A combination of stubbornness and the fear of being wrong holds people back from making the right decision. Everyone will make mistakes, but the people with bigger character are the individuals willing to admit them. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Reverend Hale is a stubborn character in the play who changes, comes to his senses, and admits his mistakes.
