The Jonestown Massacre “Hurry my children, hurry, Jim Jones told his followers as they drank the poison that ended their lives”(Streissguth 1). James Warren Jones was an American religious leader who was born on May 13, 1931 and died on November 18, 1978. Jones soon became known as the leader of a cult called “ The People’s Temple”. Jim Jones initiated and was responsible for a mass murder and mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Mass murder and mass suicide committed by Jim Jones and the government as a part of the massacre are two theories surrounding the mystery behind “The Jonestown Massacre”.
For example, the well known leader of India’s independence movement, Gandhi, was assassinated by, “a Hindu extremist who objected to Gandhi’s tolerance for the Muslims, “(History.com, 1948 Gandhi Assassinated). The main reason for his assassination was that someone was intolerant of his tolerance for the Muslims. This portrays another time in which intolerance led to death. Also, the assassination of Gandhi is similar to that of Martin Luther King Jr., the main civil rights leader in the United States during the sixties who often protested the unfair treatment of blacks in America. His assassination is obscured by conspiracy, as to whether or not his convicted assassin really acted alone or if he conspired with others.
Also, the beginning of the murder case was arguable and debatable as well. The possibility of O.J. Simpson's guiltiness or innocence caused many people of opposite races to become opposed to each other. The fact that the people murdered were white and Simpson was black caused chaos throughout the US of taking sides (Pellowski, 2001). During the trial, citizens of America had felt similar as they did in the beginning. Both of the juries in the O.J. Simpson trial made opposite choices.
