Nick
Gatsby was not a true hero, he was nothing but a sidekick for Nick. Although Gatsby was seen as a knight in shining armor through the eyes of many readers, Nick was seen as the hero.
While Gatsby is a good person because he did things that Nick never could, Nick is the only character who is truly morally good. He closes many open doors for himself to avoid schemes and conflict with others, he is a good listener and therefore is told a lot of secrets, unlike gatsby’s infinitesimal mind, and is a very open-minded person and likes to try new things. From this information, many novel readers believe that Gatsby may not have been all that it. I personally agree with this statement because Nick has always shown that he is a very honest and sincere

Being morally good is essential to have self-respect and being able to respect others.
Having respect is also a component of being happy. In the novel we see Nick Carraway refusing good money opportunities to help the community just for the sake of helping. For example: When Gatsby was willing to pay Nick for inviting Daisy over, Nick got offended and refused the money because he wanted to invite Daisy over and help out a friend. “Well, this would interest you. It wouldn’t take up much of your time and you might pick up a nice bit of money.” said gatsby ” I had no choice except to cut him off there.” implied Nick. Nick cut off Gatsby because he was offended that his friendship wasn’t enough to be able to help
Gatsby for free. Nick also gave the impression that he felt as though their relationship was not genuine and would have felt cheap if he accepted the money.
Being a good listener is a result of being raised humbly. He also can extemporize his humbleness towards others. In college, we were told that Nick was told a lot of secrets because he was a good listener. Even as a child Nick always listened and comprehended things that he was told. The reason is that his father would tell him to be cautious about

I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” this tells us that Nick’s father is a very humble person and that his humbleness has been passed down to Nick. from this passage we can also take in that maybe Nicks dad has learned some life lessons and has taken this passage away from tough moments in life. Aside from being a good listener, Nick is a very judgemental person. I think that quite a bit of the story is affected by his judgment because he pasquinades honorably, which makes the other characters rethink their decisions sometimes.
Nick being open-minded has given him a lot of party opportunities that he probably wouldn’t have experienced if he was closed-minded because he wouldn’t even take it into consideration and just stick to what he does all the time. I enjoy that Nick is very open-minded because he makes some very interesting scenes in the book that was enjoyable like when they were partying and drinking in the apartment with all the girls.
Nick has done many favors for Gatsby, he was there when Gatsby wanted him to be, and overall has done a lot for him. An amazing example of this proving that Nick is a good and reliable guy is when Gatsby needs a favor from Nick to invite Daisy over for tea so Gatsby could catch up with her as explained in the quote on page 71, “I’m going to make a big request of you to-day, Gatsby said” and on page 83 Jordan said, “He wants to
So how honest is Nick truly? Not very. After knowing every detail about the events that occurred, he was destroyed mentally. The little gray areas display that Nick truly was not as soberly minded as he appeared to be. Though well spoken, Nick no longer knows what honesty truly is, and it causes him to see people’s lies as truth, human sin as moral, and a person’s death as their eternal well being.
At the first party Nick goes to, one of the girls he meets says a rumor about Gatsby: “Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once” (48). This immediately brings into question the kind of man Gatsby is. Even though this is a rumor, the fact that it has been spread around shows how these people, most of whom don’t know Gatsby personally, don’t view him as the perfect man that Nick does. Rather, they view him as a mysterious enigma of a man with a cloudy past with potentially morally wrong actions. These judgemental guests even go as far as to question his loyalty to America by claiming he was a German spy during the war.
Nick came to the realization of how shallow and greedy the wealthy really are, and he struggles with knowing that after everything Gatsby did for people no one showed up to his funeral. Nick received no reward, although instead nothingness, “But he didn't despise himself and it didn't turn out as he had imagined... She vanished into her rich house, into her rich, full life, leaving Gatsby nothing”(Fitzgerald 82). Gatsby never did obtain Daisy as she had no care he was gone. Daisy had forgotten about everything Gatsby did for her and the love and compassion he expressed for her, “I found myself on Gatsby's side, and alone...
Nick is a part of the middle class which is one of the reasons he is nonjudgmental. He grew up having to work harder to get what he wanted. Nick was not so poor that he was worried he would not eat, but he did have to work in order to take care of himself. He was not handed an inheritance like the ‘old money’ people. Therefore, Nick’s class status causes him to be nonjudgmental and open minded towards people no matter their
As Nick continues to tell the story we see that he has a set of different thoughts and feelings. Nick is morally ambiguous
Therefore, even the people around Nick noticed his behaviors, which led them to consider him as
One of the first things we hear from nick in the book is that he will not judge people, that that is how he was taught. On the first page of the book he states “ … I’m inclined to reserve all judgements…” This clearly states that he with holds his judgement for others so he can see people in a different light, but as the story further progresses, it is clearly shown that he does not hold his judgement, he quite clearly lets it show in multiple chapters. It seems to most he does with hold most of his judgement, but is also clearly shown that he does not in most cases.
Nick sees himself in a higher light than others in the book. “Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known”(Fitzgerald 59). While Nick comes from a wealthy background, he finds everyone else to be pretentious. He sees himself as the only person in the story to be authentic and honest. “
In the book ' ' The Great Gatsby ' ' Nick is caught up in Gatsby`s life. Either by the fact that he lives next door to him or that he is interested in Gatsby`s lifestyle. Nick has this high opinion of Gatsby in a way that his life is tangled up in Gatsby`s life. Making it hard to not be interested in Gatsby`s past and present, but its the way he makes everyone feel is why Nick has this high opinion.
“I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.” In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick is not a reliable narrator. He prides himself on his honesty, yet he is a very dishonest person. We can see through his actions at parties, and his relationship with Jordan throughout the book that he cannot be trusted. Nick is often under the influence of alcohol when there are big events or parties.
Nick to be honest is not that bad of a person in that he is a loyal friend who stood by Gatsby through everything, he’s observant, and he has strong moral values, but Nick also is judgemental, hypocritical, and tries to make himself out to be someone that he’s not which ultimately comes around to bite him in the
In the story "The Great Gatsby" Nick has a favorable opinion of Jay Gatsby. In the first chapter of the book Nick states "When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction- Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn. " The book gives many examples of Nick thinking of Gatsby as the "Great" such as Gatsby 's smile, what Gatsby was willing to do for Daisy, and what Gatsby did for himself.
Nick felt obligated to make it right because he was the only loyal friend Gatsby had. This scene of the novel displays irony because everyone always went to Gatsby’s parties but when it came to his funeral, they didn't care enough to even show up. The one person who showed up beside Nick was in fact Gatsby’s father. Nick is able to finally meet him, and his father shows Nick Gatsby’s handwritten self-improvement goals and schedule.
