The Minoans Minoan society and their existance is important because Minoans were the earliest Greeks. This led to further population, which has developed into the Greece we know today. Although some may overlook this small society, Kim Covert writes “Ancient Greece is often called the cradle of western civilization” (Covert 6). First, this is because the Minoans were the first in the Mediterranean area, infulencing and sharpening the culture, religion, and architecture of all of Greece. Secondly, the Minoans developed the early Greek language later to be used all over the world. Lastly, the Minoans built “A large port and a large fleet of ships…[which] allowed them to trade with other civilizations” (Covert 8) not only their good, but their own culture and style. The Minoans were the earliest Greeks who lived on the island of Crete. Although there are disagreements on when they exactly lived, Minoan settlement started around 2,000-1,500 B.C. The Minoans first settled on the islands of Greece adapting well to their environment. First settling on the southern part of Crete, “Minoans built a huge port and a large fleet of ships. Their ships allowed them to trade with

In a sense, because they were the first Greek settlers, they set the tone and standard for the rest ofGreece and its future, ie: Greek culture, religion, and architecture. All of these were looked to, studied, and replicated through all of history. Second, this small society was important because of its early writing. Britannica states, “LInear B is an adapted form of Linear A, which was borrowed from the Minoans by the Mycean Greeks,” (Russon 1). The Minoans kick started all Greek culture, religion, and architecture, is still studied, looked to, and replicated to this day, this was a very important contribution to the
With many influential contributions how can one not admire them from philosophy, art, architecture, science, and math. The ancient Greeks were also able to accomplish this while fighting the Persian and Peloponnesian war. In philosophy there was Socrates Aristotle, and plato. Socrates created the socratic method which today is known as the scientific method which is still commonly used in science. Some of the greatest achievement in Greek were science and math from medicine, biology, physics, geometry, psychology, and astronomy.
The Minoans were one of the earliest Greek civilizations. They resided on the island of Crete, south of the Greek mainland. This civilization developed a hypocaust heating system, a sewer system, underground clay pipes, and many other practical innovations. These technological advances made by the Minoans have significantly contributed to their importance in the development of this period of world history.
To continue, the Mediterranean was controlled completely by Rome, and they could easily use this impeccable water source for quicker travel by boat and more efficient trade. The Mediterranean sped up the process of trade and advanced Rome quickly (11). This is similar to how the US stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean making America a prime trader with countries from west to east. Both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans help to advance the US and greater develop trading networks. The Roman trade network relied severely on the Mediterranean, and without it, Rome’s economy would have suffered hugely.
Athens would become wealthy thanks to their control of trade along the Mediterranean. Because of all the trade that Athens partook in, Athenians enjoyed both foreign and native products which gave the Athenians a high standard of living. The Athenians used a major port known as Piraeus in the Mediterranean as a huge commercial center to exchange goods. Thanks to this port the Athenians were able to trade with many different civilizations across the Mediterranean including Egypt, Syria, and Libya. In addition to acquiring foreign goods the Athenians also incorporated foreign words in to their language, as well as dresses and
Greece is a land covered by mountains with nothing much else to it yet one of the greatest civilizations ever to exist on this planet. Greece is part of Europe but is made up of more than 6,000 islands as well as a peninsula. Ancient Greeks live over 2500 years ago and considering their geography it is remarkable that they got to the greatness that they did get to. But they could have been even greater if the geography Greece had cooperated with the ancient Greek cities and citizens in the areas of their economy, their social/cultural ways, and their political beliefs.
All of their resources such as plays, laws, and myths brought in the power of speech as an essential part of learning which could lead people to progress which was so valued. They were all interconnected, and positively impacted ancient Greek civilization, so that it could continue to evolve into the Greece it is
Some of these effects were not beneficial to the Greeks, however. The first positive effect of geography on the Ancient Greek civilization was the freedom and independence that merchants and traders had gained by sailing and trading on the seas around Greece. According to Document 1, the seas around Greece became its highways,
Every region possesses different strengths and weaknesses which can shape the goods and services they offer. Trade is imperative if you want to have different goods. In the introduction of Life in Two City-States: Athens and Sparta, the text explained that “Athens was a walled city near the sea. Close by, ships came and went from a busy port supporting trade.” Trade was easy to establish and ports allowed for ships to come into Athens.
Many of the ancient lands we learn about in school are situated in river valleys teeming with silt that’s just waiting for stuff to be grown in it. This doesn’t make things easy for them, exactly, but, at the very least, that part of their life is taken care of. They can get both water and food from these river valleys they call home, as well as wealth from trading their crops. This was the case for both Mesopotamia and Egypt. Ancient Greece, however, as stated in Document 1, did not have these advantages.
The significance of Athenian men receiving army training as well as an education allowed for not only the bettering of their military, (which due to their location by the Aegean Sea had one of the strongest Navies in Ancient Greece) it also let them have knowledge in the arts and philosophy, this makes me want to live in Athens because I would know that i would be protected and the economy of my city state would be stable. Although Sparta may have some advantages over Athens, Athens was better prepared and knowledgeable over Sparta. In light of the evidence provided, Athens truly was the most impactful
People in ancient Greece traveled far and wide to discover new trade routes. Many stories were written about the sea back then. In “Travel in Ancient Greece” by Mark Cartwright it states the following about some stories about the sea, “In the earliest works of Greek literature in the 8th century BCE, both Homer and Hesiod describe traders, in particular, as great travelers. Works such as the Odyssey illustrated that the authors themselves had clearly traveled or at least spoken to those who had, and one might say that Odysseus' epic journey home to Ithaca was itself a celebration of the adventures inherent in travel”. Due to the amount of Trade in ancient Greece many people traveled to trade in distant lands.
Greeks became skilled people and traders. Retaining a plentitude of raw materials for construction. They built some of the most impressive structures in history. Mountains were a big thing but mostly a negative effect on this civilization for agriculture. The Seas were also a very big thing and had a great positive effect on this civilization for food and trading.
Undoubtedly it helped the citizens of Athens to broaden their minds, their cultural awareness and, what was probably most important, to develop
Basically, it’s imperative to point out the fact that the roots of Western civilization can be traced back to Mediterranean classical ancient times, as well as other parts of European predominantly occupied by the Greek. In this regard, the geography of Greece played an important role in the development of the Greek Civilization, for instance, “HIST 101 Western Civilization I.” (n.d) states, “Greece is an extremely mountainous, peninsula almost completely surrounded by water. It includes both a mainland and some 1400 outlying islands in the Mediterranean Sea.”
Trade did impact Greece because they were able to show and spread their art and religion with surrounding civilizations and
