Year-Round Schools, An Important Solution to an Academic Achievement Gap Throughout America, children are receiving remedial education due to the extremely problematic academic gap among the United States and other foreign nations. What must one do about this achievement deficit? The government has proposed numerous solutions to this dilemma, such as imposing Common Core standards, increasing testing, and adopting more school hours into each school’s schedule. Still, America has fallen behind multitudes of nations economically and academically. This can only mean that some other pertinent action must be taken to reduce the number of students receiving remedial education and give America a national advantage. One of the solutions or differences considered has been year-round schooling, or options similar for summer learning, provided by all public schools. With the introduction of year-round school into society, people have begun to wonder where exactly the traditional school calendar originated from. The report mentioned in the prior paragraph also states that morale of teachers and students increases with the transition from traditional school to year-round school. Thus, the students are more excited to learn, and are likely more cooperative with their completing their schoolwork. Year-round schools may also reduce class sizes because one report linked attracting more teachers to smaller class sizes, which is what year-round schooling is likely to do. To conclude, year-round school would give students more frequent breaks between quarters so that they would not “burn out” at the end of the school year (Lyttle, 2011). Increasing morale is a stepping stone to not only closing the achievement gap, but also improving the educational experience
