Why People Should Study Philosophy

Before answering any question, I think one should first to know what philosophy is. The word philosophy comes from the Greek roots philo- meaning "love" and -sophos, or "wisdom;" people study philosophy in order to understand how and why people do certain things and how to live a good life (Vocabulary.com). Harry Hunt says wisdom is considered by many to be simply the art of learning how to succeed in life (Bible Dictionary, 2003: 1675).
Most of Christians ask why they should have to study philosophy because they can read the Scripture and then preach to the people, and they can do all the sacraments. John M. The word “theology” generally means “the study of God” (Gotquestion.org); it teaches about God and His dealings with human beings and the rest of creation. This means that theology is the art and science of knowing and understanding God in an organized and understandable manner, so when a person is studying theology he attempts to understand God as He is revealed in the Bible because Apostle Paul says God’s decisions are too deep for mortal minds to fully understand and His ways are beyond our limited comprehension (Rom. 11:33 NKJV).
According to Drs. Mary Marshall and Nicholas Waghorn (2017), philosophy and theology make us to understand and assess the intellectual claims of religion, particularly Christianity. Shawn Floyd (2017) says Thomas Aquinas (1225 – 1274) used his philosophical skills in exploring God’s nature and in defending Christian teachings. I think in order to understand life in a philosophical way; someone has to know about ethics. A wise person or a person who is knowledgeable should also know how to do things; this shows us that all the branches of philosophy depend on each other. A person who wants to succeed in his life should live in an ethical way; people used to say that you can be highly educated but if you do not have morals you are like a dead donkey.
Ethics is important because through it a person studies what is right and wrong in human endeavors and it makes him to categorize values and pursue them. after categorizing them you have to know what values you should follow, hold them and also learn how to achieve them (Landauer and Rowlands: 2001).
