"Ponce de Leon" By: Josh Rice 10/27/14 Juan Ponce de Leon was born in a Spanish village called Santervás de Campos in the year 1460. Historians don 't know a lot about his past, but they can place his heritage back to a very wealthy and noble family. When Ponce was young, he served as a squire to Pedro Núñez de Guzmán, who used to be a noble knight commander of the Order of Calatrava. Pedro taught Ponce the important qualities of religion, fighting skills, and other manners used in daily life. He was like a father and a best friend to Ponce de Leon.
Discovering all of these islands made him a very big figure back in Europe. Lots of people, especially the Spaniards, looked at him as a great explorer who brought back new items from the islands of the New World. He was and still is, a very important figure in Spanish culture because he helped found the island of San Salvador. Most of his discoveries, though, were on the trips that he led to find new lands.
Cortes, as well as many other explorers during this time, was inspired by the Three G’s: God, gold, and glory. He planned to conquer the new lands for Spain, to convert the natives to Catholicism, and to obtain the riches of the land, mostly gold. Conquistador is basically a record of the last days of the Aztec civilization, as the two groups, the Aztecs and the Spaniards, clash, and the Spaniards ultimately come out on top.
Columbus was an Italian explorer born in 1451 in Genoa. After developing a plan to find an easier and new way to Asia, in 1485, Columbus presented his plans to King John II of Portugal. The king submitted Columbus's proposal to his experts, who rejected it. Columbus had persisted in demonstrating his project to the court of Portugal twice. However, with Portugal, Genoa and Venice’s rejection, he resorted to Ferdinand and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain, who accepted to financially aid him in his journey.
Pope Urban II’s main objective in launching the First Crusade was not to take back Jerusalem, but an attempt
Thomas Jefferson had dreamed of exploring the West for a long time before he had even become President. In 1783 he had asked Clark's brother, George, to take on the challenge of exploring the Louisiana Territory. After finally purchasing the Louisiana Territory, Jefferson asked, his secretary of state, Lewis to go on the journey. Lewis was very intelligent and trustworthy, and after being given specific instructions and properly trained, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. William Clark would then offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13 at Camp Dubois, which is now in present-day Indiana.
He used his perseverance to keep going on his journey despite being without his family for decades. He also used his smart and quick thinking to make good decisions on where his journey should go next. Odysseus was a hero throughout the Odyssey because of the character traits Homer has written him to have. Although the epic poem has been altered throughout the centuries since the original one was written, Odysseus has stayed a hero to the reader with his amazing skills and motivation to continue his journey. The theme of this epic poem was to keep your head high.
Through perseverance, you can accomplish your dreams. This theme is shown in the memoir October Sky, and is seen in topics such as, Sonny’s pursuit of education, his rockets, and his relationship with his father. A vital part of Sonny’s life during the days of the Rocket Boys was education. "I trudged up the stairs.
Then from the 15th century, Christianity came to Sub-Sahara Africa and travelled gradually through the 19th century to other parts of Africa. I firmly believe that it was this period (between the 15th and 19th centuries) when Satan virtually had a total monopoly over Africa that provoked the Baptism of Satan in Africa. That was the period Christian missionaries started pouring in from Europe with “impunity”. That was the period naked young boys and girls (descendants of great engineers who once built the Tower of Babylon) were taught how to read and write. That was the period the African first saw the wonders of firearm technology or the “mystery” of the dressing mirror and were more motivated to go to school.
Ever since childhood, people develop an image on what a true hero should be like. A considerable hero is someone who looks after their allies and makes rational decisions in tough situations. On the contrary, in the book, The Odyssey, Odysseus shows that not all heroes make the most reasonable choices. For instance, he is willing to sacrifice his own shipments in order to get back to Ithaca. Yes, it may be one of the best options considering the position they are in, but he was the reason why the crew is in that position in the first place.
Juan Ponce de Leon was best known for leading the exploration of Florida and looking for the Fountain of Youth. Dr. Amer Ahmed’s discussion educated me about the history of Islam and how it has influenced hip-hop throughout the years. Islam was prevalent in Africa through trade prior to the start of the transatlantic slave trade in the 15th century. Arabs migrated to North Africa, specifically Somalia and Ethiopia, seeking refuge, and along the way, began trading and sharing ideas with the natives. Over the next century, 44.7 percent of Muslims ruled Africa, and Islam began to spread into western parts of Africa. When slaves were brought to America from West Africa, the practice of Islam was carried on through oral tradition.
Christopher Columbus determination to find a water route west from Europe to Asia influenced the Age of Exploration greatly. Especially King Henry VII who was eager to increase wealth for Europe. He also in 1496, issued letters patent to Cabot and his son, which authorized them to make a voyage of discovery and to return with goods for sale on the English market. He also encouraged Cabot’s second voyage.
One of Patrick Henry's favorite quotes was "I know not what others may choose, but, as for me, give me liberty or give me death” once said by Patrick Henry. Patrick Henry was a leader when it came to bad times and tried to help it be better. In 1779 he retired as governor of Virginia after 3 terms. Then he was elected governor of Virginia again in 1796, but he didn’t accept the offer. In this essay you will learn about the life of Patrick Henry and how he was one of the leading figures of the American Revolutionary period.
According to the overview, “between 1500 and 1800, European nations traded for slaves, gold, and ivory along the west coast of Africa, but they did not go deeply into the continent.” In 1884, fourteen countries met in Berlin to discuss the division of Africa to prevent war from breaking out.. This meeting would come to be known as the Berlin Conference led by Ottoman Bismarck. Up until 1885, they stated that if a leader wanted to control a certain part of Africa, then they must prove that they have control over that area and that was it. This was the beginning of European imperialism in Africa.
