Starting school later has be a topic talked about in many schools across the United States. There has been lots of research done about the topic if it is good for you. School should start later because it eliminates sleep deprivation, has academic benefits, and reduces the amount of health problems. The first important reason for school starting later is that if it doesn’t it causes sleep deprivation in students..For example, when teens go thru puberty, the biological clock that works with there brain shifts into a different time setting creating the idea of that they are going to bed later than they usually do.“During puberty, the clock shifts.Suddenly you feel like going to bed one to three hours later. But since school starts at the same time …show more content…
While our students academic benefits ,and sleep deprivation is a big deal for starting later,it also can help reduce health problems. If you slept in longer, you have a less risk of being a drowsy driver, and having other health problems from a sleep deficit.“Drowsy driving causes more than 100,000 car accidents every year.”(Hutson 11).“They also have a lower risk of being in car accidents, and have fewer health problems, such as depression, mood changes, and being overweight.”(Herrington 20).The evidence helps explain that if school started later then people would get more sleep, cause less health problems. Some people believe that school shouldn’t start later because “Opponents say starting classes later in the day… cuts into time for.. homework” (Herrington 20).With that being said, with school starting later, there would also be more time in the morning for doing
Should School Start Later? Will it actually be a huge advantage for students to attend school later in the day? This has been a rising argument over the years, and the health of teens, because of their increased tiredness has been an increasing concern of parents, and teachers and supervisors. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has been urging schools to start at later times such as 8:30 to ensure that students get adequate amounts of sleep every night (Source 2).
Later School Start Times “About 90% of the teens, problem is insufficient sleep” (Dr. Chen), most of the adolescents are suffering of sleep deprived which is unabling them to be healthy and pay attention in class. Many of the schedules that are given in schools are the worst for teens because one one the things they require them to do is to wake up early to attend to the classes. Middle and High School start times should start later because it will benefit students academic growth, and improve health . Starting school times later will make teen have an academic growth. Starting school later could help teens academically because, they would be more attentive to any work or test that comes their way.
Having later start times can benefit kids in many ways such as improving their grades. When schools have later start times, students can wake up later and be more awake leading to them being more attentive in class and getting better grades. Researcher Finley Edwards “Found that math scores improved by 2 percentile points and reading scores by 1 point in middle schools that moved to a later start time.” Students might end up being tired in class because they didn't sleep long enough the night before leading to them not learning in class that may result in worse grades that the student is capable. Students grades and staying on task can be improved by having schools start later.
If school starts later kids could get more sleep and if kids get more sleep they’re less likely to develop bad health issues. In fact, middle school should start later.
According to Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom in a Public School District in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when school times were changed to start later results of her studies showed that 9th-11th graders attendance increased, grades improved, and decreased depression rates reported by students(Should High School Students Have a Later Start to the School Day?). This illustrates that with schools starting later in the day, students will have more time in the mornings to prepare for classes. This means less tardy students and “fewer dropouts''. The kids will have more time to debrief before school starts again. They will have more time to sleep which will improve their grades(attention).
School should start a lot later because it can improve mental health and the well being of the students attending; it can increase overall attendance and grades; and it can recover a student's mood and ability. Parents, students and teachers often argue, with little evidence, about whether U.S. high schools begin too early in the morning. In the past three years, however, scientific studies have piled up, and they all lead to the same conclusion: a later start time improves learning, and the later the start, the better. When a student is forced to wake up earlier than required, it can cause stress and ruin someone's entire day. But, when you wake up later it not only improves your mood, but also your ability to perform well.
First of all schools should not start later because it would affect after school activities. If school started later it would affect the kids who are more involved. Later start times would mean later end times. If school started later it would cut into family dinner and other family activities. If school did change their start times then teens would just go to bed later.
School Should Start Later A recent poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation found that 60% of children under the age of 18 complained of being tired during the day, according to their parents, and 15% said they fell asleep at school during the year. This proves that kids aren’t getting enough sleep before school. I believe that a later middle school start time would have many beneficial effects on kids. As a result, kids would be more focused in class because they would be getting more sleep, that would lead to better grades, and finally reduced absenteeism.
To begin with teenagers usually need 8.5 hours of sleep a day. Not enough sleep for students has gone to far. 22,000 kids all across the USA are stressed and tired for school. School should start later because starting school early is not just a student complaint, it's an observation backed up by science. Studies have shown the brain doesn't properly function until two hours after students leave there rooms in the morning.
A report by Newsweek says that “Perpetual lack of sleep is tied to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression and a shortened life span in adults, underscoring the importance of establishing good sleep habits early in life”(1). We may be fine without sufficient sleep now, but health consequences will show later in life. Diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are already big problems in America. An article by CNN says that “Adolescents that go to sleep at midnight or later are also more likely to suffer from depression and have suicidal thoughts” (1). The mental health of students at Clarke should not be overlooked.
Starting school later can actually improve your learning, health and even your attitude and all of that can be changed by just starting school at 8:30AM. Kids don't start taking in information until 8:30AM because that is when the brain starts to really work. According to National sleep foundation ¨ teenagers are naturally inclined to stay up later and get up later in the morning.¨ ¨Starting school at 8:30 improves a student's chance of success,¨ according to the (National sleep foundation). Not only do teens want to sleep more, but sleeping more actually improves their health.
First, some people assert that teenagers should wake up early in the morning for school, while others argue that teenagers should be able to sleep in because they need their sleep. Summarize the Issue- In the article, “Why should Should Start Later in the Morning” by Emily Richmond, “Should School Start Later?” by Justin O'Neill, and “Sleepy Teens: High School Should Start Later in the Morning?” by Mark Fischetti, they debate about the fact that school should start later. There are many explanations for the issue if school should start later for kids. For example, some people think it is a very smart idea that would stop causing kids/teens to come into school everyday looking tired. Also, it would get them more rest because of the time that they had stayed up the last night catching up on loads of homework and studying.
Schools should start later in the day so students can get enough sleep to fully function. Starting school early in the morning can have huge effects to a student's health, academics, and attendance. First of all, not getting enough sleep can affect someone's health in future. Second, many students may fall asleep in class and miss vital information for an upcoming test. Finally, as a child get older their internal clock change and it is very hard to get the recommended 8 1/2 - 9 1/2 hours of sleep.
One other reason why school should start later is because it is more convenient. In the first place it’s better for one’s health. In order for your body to grow and develop you have to get enough sleep. If you do not get enough sleep it will lower the immune system and increase one’s chances of getting ill.
This is an important issue because starting schools later has many positive effects. Some positive effects of starting school later is improvements in grades, test scores, and overall performance in core subjects. Another positive effect of starting schools later is that students will be more attentive, have a better memory, a better mood, and a better behavior and executive function.
