In my opinion I strongly disagree that mobile phones should not be permitted at school. In 2012 a company named Pew Internet Project did research on teens; on the ages of teen owning mobile phones and found out that 78% of teens between the ages of 12-17 owned a mobile phone. Identifying that majority of teenagers today have a mobile phone and if given the opportunity would most likely take the mobile phone to school; by banning mobile phones from school will decrease the risk of distraction, cheating, cyber-bullying and social class status when the student is at school.
A significant problem that’s in counted with allowing the access of students bringing mobile phones to school is that it distracts them and perhaps others around them. For instance a key distraction mobile phones create for students is an easier way of communicating to others via text; this could be to somebody outside of school or even to somebody on the other side of the room and can be considered as a faster and new process of passing notes or answers on a test. In schools students can use mobile phones as a social status. Students whose parents who can’t afford to buy them a latest mobile phone can be belittled and fell out of place because they simply don’t have the latest gadget. The students with the latest phones will want to pull them out at school showing their new toy off and possibly causing another student to be jealous and perhaps steal it. Amongst schools throughout the nation, the cell phone policy has been tested and altered to fit the restrictions on their use by students. The different advancements in technology have influenced many teachers and staff to allow leniency to cell phone use in the classroom, with the belief that they have purpose to assist in everyday learning. Others believe they have no place being on school property during school hours since loss, theft, or damage is possible. In addition, cellphones can be a distraction in classrooms which factors in faculty deciding what is to be done about cellular devices on the campus. Of course, the teacher does not have total control over each student, there are means by which an instructor can yield the results she/he is looking for. Although our authors both bring up strong points about the use of cell phones in classrooms, they sometimes overstated the degree to which they are disruptive. The authors also give a good idea as to how the reduction of cell phone use would help classrooms become better learning environments with more respect for instructors and peers and how one’s grades have the possibility of improving once their cell phones have been put away. If purely stating these ideas to students would not help the students use their phones less, then incentives or penalizations can be offered by the instructor to make such a problem
