Why Schools Should Have a Later Start Time Did you ever know that there are ways to help students improve their health by having their school time start later? There are many things that can change when schools have a later start time. There can be improvements and could make some new problems too. Someone against school starting later can bring up many issues. These issues could be, what about transportation? Who will be home to watch the kids after school and many more. Others have a view that schools should start later because high schools, they already have a late start on Thursdays. The school day should start later because it will help students’ health. Many things that involve a great amount of work will be a little easier to do it and focus on it better when the school day starts later. Letting school start later will let students have more sleep than they normally get. When students have more sleep, it will improve their health. It will also let the students have better thinking throughout the day. It will make students have the ability to not have to get up early to go to a place they learn for 7 hours or more a day. This will let the students be able to sleep in and stay up later because they will know they do not have to go to school at 7:30 in the morning. It will also let the students stay up later and play with their friend instead of going to bed. You may argue that it will not improve their health, but students are suppose to get 8-10 hours of sleep every night, but most students get less than 7 hours of sleep every night. School starting later is better for athletes because they will get more sleep and have a better chance of not getting hurt. Having later start times can benefit kids in many ways such as improving their grades. When schools have later start times, students can wake up later and be more awake leading to them being more attentive in class and getting better grades. If school starts later kids could get more sleep and if kids get more sleep they’re less likely to develop bad health issues. In fact, middle school should start later.
If the schools started later in the day absences would drop. Students being late is a big problem in their grades. Kids wake up early in the morning because sometimes their schools start early. When they wake up early in the morning their body still says that it is time to sleep. If we have classes that are later than kids will attend school more and get more sleep.

This illustrates that with schools starting later in the day, students will have more time in the mornings to prepare for classes. This means less tardy students and “fewer dropouts''. The kids will have more time to debrief before school starts again. They will have more time to sleep which will improve their grades(attention).
Kids spend all day playing sports and all night trying to finish their homework. If school was later kids could go to bed after their sports and wake up and finish their homework before school. Even if they wake up at 6 to get it finished they probably have plenty of time to get it done, and they still have a better sleep then when they went to school at 8. Many kids have a hard time getting to bed before 11, but if we had school later kids could make up their lack of sleep by sleeping in later.

This would then cause the teens to be early on their shift and mess up a lot of people, which could result in them getting fired from their job. If schools stayed to the usual time schedule it would not cause any mix ups or confusion.
Many people argue whether school start times should stay the same or become later in the day. However some positive effects can still come from waking up early in the morning and getting to school around the same time. 21% of teen motor vehicle accidents are caused by drowsy driving. Many teens everyday are complaining about their school start times being way too early. Teen tiredness is now considered to be a public health pandemic. School starting at a later time is beneficial because it helps students catch up on sleep. It helps students stay out of trouble.
These things will improve one’s health. In addition to improving one’s health, it is also better for one’s concentration. The average student needs about ten hours of sleep; however, most students, especially teens, only get around seven hours of sleep. If school started later students would be able to sleep in and therefore get more sleep which would increase their concentration in class.

The National Sleep Foundation states “, A National Sleep Foundation poll reported that 28% of teenagers have fallen asleep in class at least once due to lack of sleep. Negative effects of sleep loss include impairments in mood, attention, memory, behavior and executive function… increase in caffeine use… sleep deprived-teens at higher risk of car accidents.” This means that by just adjusting the time by an hour students are more aware of their surroundings, more focused on what they’re learning, have a better mood, and executive function, and it reduces the amount of sugary snacks they have eat or drink to stay awake.
Also less teens get in car crashes and are at a big risk for drugs,alcohol,depression, even suicide. Teens get in crashes because they do not get enough sleep at night. Another is that grades up when teens sleep in and absences drop by 15% in Bonneville by starting school later. These are both examples why school should start later in the day. If we start school later absences would possibly go down like Bonneville did and grades will possibly go up as well,too.
Early School Start Times Most adolescents don’t get nearly the correct amount of sleep and the early school start times make it worse. Having school start later would have a great impact on teens’ overall health. Some people may say that teens should just go to sleep earlier, but its not that easy. Early school start times should be changed because they are dangerous, inconvenient, and it negatively affects body growth.
