This is one of those debates that happens over and over again. My judgement on school uniforms is a yes and a no. It would stop bullying over clothing but it basically tells the kids that they can’t express themselves at school. School uniforms would stop distractions but the children would feel like they can’t show their differences in clothing like some kids like colorful stuff and some have traditional clothing and some like certain things that they like to dress in. School uniforms are not a bad idea but the flaw is how the uniforms affect the students minds. It could affect how they act at home by that I mean that kids act the way they wanna be and dress how they want to dress. But if we change that their minds are saying that wanting
He said students in gangs have adapted to the new dress code, blending in with the schools’ students populations. A third argument for uniforms and dress code is that they can help curb school violence associated with gang-identified clothing. President Clinton has often spoken about this. In his 1996 State of the Union Address, Clinton advocated uniforms to “make public schools more orderly centers of learning and safer sanctuaries for children.” A number of schools took his advice and implemented dress codes to stem gang recruitment and criminal activities. If certain colors and styles distinguish one gang from another, they reasoned, banning that clothing could stymie gang activities on school grounds. And there have been result: Administrators in Long Beach, California, for example, report that school crime has been reduced by 76 percent since uniforms have been
First of all, private schools required uniforms, therefore parents are require to buy uniforms even though their kids already have a closet full of clothes. Public schools do not require students to wear uniforms, but public schools do have a dress code which every student must adhere to. People believe there should be uniform because it reduces bullying by instilling discipline among students. Students cannot express themselves and wear their favorite clothes. According to Nancy E. Bailey, PhD, an education author and activist, she states that ,“ Students should learn to make informed decisions about the clothes they wear.”(ProCon.org) Overall, people should consider public schools because of it does not require uniforms.
One reason students from all ages should not wear uniform is lack of expression. greatschools.org by Marian Wilde said... “when a student was sent to detention for wearing socks adorned with the image of winnie the pooh’s friend tigger, the girls family sued the school district for violated her freedom of speech.” This means that kids don 't have a say when they go to school because they have school uniform. The effect on this is that kids will either want to come to school. Another reason is because students will be nervous for school everyday. That why students should not wear uniform. In conclusion uniforms is a bad idea.
To begin with, students shouldn’t wear uniforms because it violates a student’s right for freedom. For example, quoting, “https://www.greatschools.org/gk/articles/school-uniforms/” by Marian Wilde, “School uniforms violate a student’s right to freedom of expression...makes a target for bullies from other schools, are difficult to enforce in public schools, and are a financial burden for poor families.” This means that some families aren’t able to afford the school uniforms. Which, leads to many students getting bullied for not having uniforms like their
Students not being required to wear uniforms would eliminate students from having body insecurities. Students having to wear uniforms makes everything more of a competition. For example, it becomes less of a best-dressed competition and more of a best-body competition. Students, particularly girls, can develop physical and mental disorders from having to wear uniforms. For example, girls might think they always have to be skinnier to look the best in the uniforms that everyone else is looking skinny in. Students should not have to wear uniforms because it makes people self conscious and takes away their focus on learning. For example, student will be constantly checking if they look good in the outfit or looking at others and comparing themselves, and then totally forgetting about the learning part of school. Overall, students having to wear uniforms will cause more body insecurities than ever before.
One example could be, if there is an intruder in their school it will be easier to catch them since they obviously aren’t wearing the same color or style as everyone else. The intruder will be spotted out easier and will be a much and faster way of dealing with the situation. Even though it may not be safer, they can deal with what is going on faster so it could result in less people getting injured. Also it’s easier for the staff/ administration to enforce a dress code. When children are at a school without a dress code people wear whatever they want. There will be more kids wearing what they want which would be harder in enforcing a dress code. By having school uniforms most people will follow it and less people will disobey it. Lastly, parents also like school uniforms. Some parents don’t like the fact on kids dressing how they want, but school uniforms will make the school a better place and keep the parents happy. Studies show that %86 of parents like school uniforms and the parents say it is lighter on their pockets. They think it makes the most memories for a child and will still enjoy school by also showing pride. Overall, school uniforms are a lot easier on the staff and give them a little break, and parents really enjoy school uniforms for their kids and think that they get a lot of benefits from
Students need to be taught at an early age that we should respect one another no matter what we wear ; similarly students need to be taught that what a person wears does not define who they are. When students learn to respect others no matter what they wear it makes them be more open minded, and makes them more respectful and kinder. One example is that when people wear what they prefer and feel more comfortable in people will respect them more because they were taught from a young age to respect each gender no matter what they put on their bodies. Many people believe that school uniforms decrease bullying but actually in the article ¨School uniforms¨ it states that in a 2007 study school uniforms increased the number of assaults by 14 and school incidents rose by 12%. If we did not have school uniforms we will learn to respect one another and be kinder which will help us in the
Firstly, school uniforms reduce the distraction in the classroom. According to “UNIFORMS: are they a good fit?” it states, “Many of these students say dress down days are somewhat distracting”(Marsha 36). This evidence proves that at a school where school uniforms are usually worn, they get to have a free day where they can wear whatever they want, but even then, one, just one day, students claim for it to be a little distracting. It also states from the same article, “Sixth grader tiffany gets sent to the principal's office because
This can lessen the bullying over who has the best styled clothing, or whose clothes is worth more. This can lead to students making bad decisions to get the clothes they wanted because what they had was not good enough. Without implementing school uniforms, someone who is being bullied and judged by their, and is lost and do not know where to turn to, might end up ending his life or someone else 's. This is not acceptable. This is not how the leaders of tomorrow should be raised and taught. Action can be either provoked now, or after names are carved into concretes and memorials have been taken placed. According to NOBullying.com, “...in Britain… half of the suicides among youth related to bullying.” Based on ABC News, the U.S. Department of Education states that over “160,000 children a day… stay home from school because they are afraid of being bullied…” If school uniforms are implemented the numbers of children not showing up to school has the potential to decrease. Access to social media makes it more easier to bully people and spreads faster. According to the infographic below from NOBullying, more than 81% of teens claim that it is more easier to bully online. Implementing uniforms will reduce the urge to
Envision waking up every morning to put on the same outfit and walk out the door, stress free. People would not have to worry about what fits, or what is fashionable at the time. Schools would not have to worry about inappropriate clothing but at the same time, that clothing may be a way for a student to express himself. Many schools view uniforms as a solution to several problems, but many schools view uniforms as a lack of self expression. School uniforms should continue, even though children may not get to express themselves, because they prohibit violence, provide cheaper lifestyles, and promote better education.
School uniforms create a level playing field among students, reducing peer pressure and bullying. When all students are dressed alike, competition between students over clothing choices and the teasing of those who are dressed in less expensive or less fashionable outfits can be eliminated. Research by the Schoolwear Association found that 83% of teachers
You might be thinking about the schools that rich kids go to in movies and TV shows or you might be thinking about Catholic schools with small children all wearing the same colored school uniforms. This is probably what most people imagine. We associate uniforms with students of foreign countries and private schools. Thoughts of students dressing in school uniforms have led to stereotyping and a gloomy outlook on schools pushing for a uniform policy. We live in a society that says you must express yourself and be an individual at all cost, but some fear that uniforms display us as robots who lack the ability to express ourselves, however, this is far from the truth. School uniforms give students a sense of unity because they feel like they can fit in without fear of being too different. Making a dress uniform mandatory will decrease sexual harassment, create more interesting humans and make schools safer.
To sum up the fact, many of the people who agree on not having school uniforms stand strongly. However, they are completely convinced they will work wonders for two main justification bullying can’t be eliminated and clothing can’t boost performance in academic environments. This is true due to all statistics stated by many studies, if we want to live in a world where kids want to be able to be themselves everywhere then we must think more deeply about not just our thoughts on uniforms. We must ask ourselves, we must ask ourselves, “should we really be spending money on useless uniforms Kids hate to
Many students that know uniforms will be beneficially, but don’t agree with school uniforms will continue to disagree with implementing them. It can be easily agreed that school uniforms may take away their self-expression in school, but what matters more in school is the way of learning. It can also be agreed that many students do not accept the self-expression of their classmates and make fun of them. Students, parents, and school administration should be able to recognize the benefits that school uniforms come with.
