Students who study music outperform their non-music peers in assessments of math, and the advantage that music provides increases over time. These findings hold true regardless of socio-economic status and race/ethnicity (Baker, 2011). Additionally, It is believed that music education enhances student motivation. This is explained by their sense of accomplishment by learning musical instruments, which allows them to build confidence to perform better within group activities (Caterall, 2012). On the other hand, schools have the benefit of investing more in other fields such as sports and recreation.
In addition, music increases students’ abilities to listen and learn. Martin Gardiner at the Center for the Study of Human Development at Brown university reported a connection between early language skills and musical ability. Giving children education in music as young as possible can help them to have the ability to be successful in learning language. In another study done by Columbia University, it demonstrated that students who participate in the music are usually more cooperative with teachers and peers, have more self-confidence, and are better able to express themselves. Moreover, the social benefits of music education can continue throughout a student’s life in ways one would never suspect.
Learners who take part in learning instruments on one to one basis or as part of ensembles, or playing music in a group were usually a motivating factor. The participants in this study described music-making “as a means for interaction with others” as well as “developing a new skill” and “reminiscing”. They included that other than learning to play a repertoire, they gain knowledge about technical mastery, the experience of participating in an ensemble, and developing skills in reading and interpreting music. Some of the adult learners stated that playing an instrument could also effectuate emotions and memories related to family members. There are also participants who were motivated to play music as it helps them to recover their health issues and improving cognitive abilities.
Music is that one tool that easily elevates the spirits of people and creates a special bond between people of different backgrounds. According to George Rachiotis, “music is the greatest creation of man, which touches the soul and also helps man to sympathetically manifest unspoken desire…” Music greatly affects people not only emotionally but also with education and life skills. And as Gerald Ford said, “Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them — a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.” Music education is a necessity in every child’s education. To begin with, music helps in education and aids people to develop sharper skills that will help academically and mentally.
Music is global and in every part of your studies whether its history, science, literature or arts you can learn something different which can enhance your knowledge and skills to apply to your daily life. Music is an art. Therefore, it has many benefits to my life depending on how I choose to pursue it as a career or something I enjoy doing or listening to in my spear times. Since, I haven't chosen music as a career; it can also be use in my life as a form of relaxation, comfort, reduces stress and anxiety, improvement of my social skills, and quality of my life by both active and passive music experience such as free improvisation If I were to design a curriculum for a music class the goal would be for students to develop an understanding of music by singing, playing instruments, preforming rhythms, dancing, composing and listening to music. I would want to include its history and evolution of music, and how it influenced the people.
From Bailey (2010) music therapy is just an alternative intervention to enhance the main treatment and make it more effective especially when working in a social situation, creatively using music can help a child better understand the frustrations of others, by the type of music their peers have chosen to express their feelings. Children with ADHD can also express their own feelings through their choices. It adds an extra dimension to learning social skills. The related literature above emphasized the importance of music therapy to the children with disability particularly children with ADHD. Music therapy for Children with ADHD can help in terms of socialization and interaction.
In our modern society people are constantly trying to evolve their brains using various methods of development. One method that has gained significance and has begun to be accepted by educators is music as a therapy for stress, performance and individuality. The issue under discussion is whether music as a tool for academic succession should be used in education. There are some students, which cannot comprehend the material of the class within an hour, but if they listen to a song several times they will immediately memorize it and can sing it all, and even remember it for life. Although music was primarily rejected by teachers due to unawareness of the subject, they now opt for it, as the advantages of music as a pedagogical approach start to be apparent.
Music, an art form, shown through an expression like no other, is brought through sound and pitch. As time moves forward, music education weakens, allowing part of our culture to slip through future generations’ fingertips. Since schools’ lack music education, thorough assessment methods also become feeble. Assessment allows schools and students to grow in music, creating strong music programs, while attracting students by engaging needed skills benefiting a child’s future. Music education is not just learning music theory and basic skills, which many programs forget.
Music could help bridge this gap between the different races or religions and possibly find a common ground to foster a deeper understanding of the others beliefs; At the least help ease tensions and put the country at peace. As a country music fan and member of that culture, my opinion on other music’s might not be as open as it could be but, through this next semester I am going to try to broaden my horizons and be able to better see the other musical cultures from a different point of view. Stepping back and experiences these other forms of music from a learning standpoint might be easier to gain an appreciation for rather than just listening on my own personal
Music therapy is the clinical use of music to achieve individual goals and improve relationships; it is also considered a form of Psychotherapy (Music Therapy Medicine). Melodies and harmonies are used to transport patients to new and safe places. The sweet rhythms brings peace and relaxation to stressed minds. Self-worth is found between each melodic note, and anxiety and depression are long forgotten. Memories that were once lost are now found, and medication is improved by this one simple healing tool.
