In Iliad, the first revenge action was made by Menelaus, the king of Sparta. He enraged and decided to take a revenge from the Trojans, because of loss of his wife, Helen. When he went to war, plenty of his companions joined him, such as Achilles, the leader of the Myrmidons, Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, Ajax the Greater, the king of Salamis, etc. After that, in book 16, Achilles lends Patroclus his armor, sends him off with a stern admonition to not to pursue the Trojans. However, Patroclus ignoring Achilles’ command, pursues and reaches the gates of Troy and is killed by Hector.
Jefferson had opposed this from the beginning, so when he was president, he made it all change. In 1801, the ruler of Tripoli, a Barbary state, demanded the payment of $250,000 for tribute, and an additional annual payment, but Jefferson refused. Because of this Tripoli declared war. Jefferson sent a naval force to the Mediterranean to protect US ships. This resulted into a four year long struggle with Tripoli.
Hector is shown to be devoted to this war between the Trojans and Greeks, and shows this when he refuses wine from his mother Hecuba when he first returns to Priam’s palace, telling her that it will only make him weak, and that instead she should go to the temple of Athena and pray that she pity Troy and its people (Book VI, 11. 275-88, pg. 249). Returning back home and making his way to his brother Paris’ house, Hector is completely ready to chastise him, showing his anger towards him as needed for not being out there and fighting in the war he himself caused (VI, 11. 342-47, pg.
Later on we learn about what life was like for the people of Troy and Greece and learn what caused the start of the war. One of the main causes of the war was the kidnapping of Helen of Troy. This likely caused Greece to want to defeat and conquer Troy. Strauss also gives us insight into the variety of different weapons and armory that was used to protect both sides. Since this took place during the Bronze Age some of the armory used included bronze breastplates, arrowheads, and chariots.
People were not allowed to bring any part of their army into Italy, and once this act was done, they lose their right to rule their own province. Caesar did this knowing that he and any man who followed him was now subject to execution if he failed in his goals. Odysseus is truly an epic hero, he has many different perils and dangers that he must face. He is a Greek soldier who fought in the Trojan War and is trying to return home. Some of the gods and goddesses are on his side, however, some are not on his side. He was stranded for ten years before he could finally go back to his family, and home on Ithaca. Odysseus is an epic hero because of his physical strength, his mental sharpness, and his cunning ability to always get out alive.
The Iliad and the Odyssey, however, vary in chronological setting. The Odyssey shows Odysseus’s ten year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. This was when Odysseus fights the mystical creatures while facing the wrath of the gods. During this time, Penelope and Telemachus drive away suitors hence waiting for Odysseus to return. Later odyssey slaughters the suitors vying for Penelope and takes Ithaca’s throne.
