The Louisiana purchase happened when Thomas Jefferson was interested in New Orleans, which belonged to France at that time. New Orleans was a major seaport that was helpful to many American businesses and was helpful for trading. Louisiana was a huge piece of land that contained 828,000 square miles. France had owned this land up until the French and Indian War, when France had to give up this land to Spain and the rest of it’s remaining lands to Great Britain. When Spain ruled over the Louisiana territory, it did not affect the United States, however in 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte took power over France. In 1802, Spain had returned back the Louisiana territory to France, which stopped America's access to the port. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson had sent the United States Minister Robert Livingston to try and buy the land from French Emperor Napoleon, who refused as he wished to create a huge empire that would include the Americas. Emperor Napoleon would soon run into money problems when he decided to offer the entire Louisiana territory for $15 million. This purchase of land would double the growing country, but many leaders of the United States opposed this idea of buying the Louisiana territory. Congress held a meeting to choose whether the purchase of the Louisiana territory would happen or it would be canceled. The Louisiana purchase was almost denied with the vote being 59-57. Thomas Jefferson would put Meriwether Lewis in charge of the expedition. Meriwether Lewis was born in Virginia in 1774. When he was much older, he would join the state militia, but at the age of 27 Meriwether Lewis would become the personal secretary for the third president, Thomas Jefferson. Meirwether Lewis would choose William Clark as his co-leader. William Clark was also born in Virginia in 1774 and he would also join the state militia where he would meet Meriwether Lewis. During 1803-1804, Clark was in charge of recruiting members for the expedition. The expedition party contained around 45 people including an French-Indian interpreter and his pregnant wife, Sacagawea a Native American who belonged to the Shoshone tribe. Having someone who can translate was helpful because the expedition party met 50 rides, which included the Shoshone, the Mandam, the Minitari, the Blackfeet, the Chinook, and the Sioux. The expedition would first start at the Mississippi River where they would explore the land that was made up of the Louisiana before they had made it to the Pacific Ocean where they stayed for a bit before returning all the way back. The expedition was successful because the 8,000-mile journey provided new information about uncharted areas of North America. The new information helped produce new maps about the territory and new info. about “newly identified”
On February 28, 1803, congress approved the expedition Jefferson had presented. $2,500 was put aside by Congress for the expedition as well. After the expedition was approved, Jefferson assigned Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition. Lewis chose William Clark to co-lead the expedition with him. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were told to explore the recently purchased Louisiana Territory.
Lewis ,Clark and 32 other men and a slave named York went on this journey. There was one woman named Sacagawea who also joined them on this trip. Lewis and Clark investigated a huge plot of land. It covered from the Mississippi river to the Rocky Mountains east , and traveled from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. They explored from the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.
Thomas Jefferson, the American President wanted to explore and discover the hidden treasures in the large Western parts of America that were inhabited by the local Indian tribes for centuries. Jefferson then hired his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis to undertake the expedition, find new routes and discover the eco system in the region. He also wanted them to build better ties with the local tribes that would help foster trade. The expedition of Lewis and Clark faced many challenges, interacted with many new Native peoples and was an important milestone in American history. Lewis and Clark had many, many challenges.
“The Lewis and Clark Expedition paddled its way down the Ohio as it prepared the Expedition to be launched officially from Camp Wood, just outside St. Louis, in the summer of 1804” (2), and the Corps of Discovery’s official mission would commence near the outskirts of St. Louis in 1804 where they would move upstream of the Missouri River to a place called Fart Mandan that was used at a trading post where they would wait out the winter. The Corps were tested with several bumps in the road that would slow and threatened the journey like the insects they would encounter, heat they would have to endure and injuries that were unavoidable given the working conditions they were under. There was a man by the name of Charles Floyd, that Lewis and Clark liked the most out of the crew, died of what was labeled as his appendix bursting and was “the only person to die on the two and one-half year journey.” As they continued forward in their quest they eventually make it to a village inhabited by the Mandan Indians whom belonged to a large trade network in the West. This is where they recruited a Frenchman by the name of Toussaint Charbonneau, that they would use as a means of translation between their current
From the start of their, Lewis and Clark embraced their old abilities and were regularly documenting the new features that Louisiana held. While Lewis was creating highly detailed maps of the land, Clark spent his time on land, documenting previously undiscovered animals (pictured below), plants, and geographic features. The expedition started smoothly, and by the end of July, the group had traveled more than 600 miles on the river. However, to the group’s unease, not one Indian had been seen or encountered. That was until the beginning of August, when the Corps of Discovery was finally given the opportunity to make a good first impression on the Native Americans.
Lewis and Clark Expedition Thomas Jefferson once said “ The work we are doing is, I trust, done for posterity, in such a way that they need not repeat it. We shall delineate with correctness the great arteries of this great country; those who came after us will fill up the canvas we begin” In 1803, Thomas Jefferson purchased the louisiana territory from France. The urge to explore the new lands and find new waterways overcome Jefferson and in 1804 the trip began. “This was a huge tract of over 800,000 square miles, taking in nearly the entire mid-section of North America from present-day Texas and Louisiana up to Montana and North Dakota. This almost doubled the size of the new country”.
Lewis was already eager to start the trip. He immediately contacted his old friend, William Clark, to co-command the expedition. President Jefferson asked Lewis to gather information on plants, animals, and people. Lewis also bought samples of animals and plants he came across with. Lewis and Clark along with the rest of the group started their expedition journey at St. Louis, Missouri in May 1804.
The expedition encountered many tribes that helped them and gave them shelter, food, weapons, etc. From one tribe they met Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau. They were interpreters and helped the tribe deal with exchanging good with other tribes. The expedition was able to exchange goods along the way for item that would help them on their
At the time, the United States was already going to buy land from France before Napoleon offered the entirety of the Louisiana territory: “In early 1803, Jefferson appointed James Monroe as a special envoy to France. Monroe and Minister to France Robert Livingston would try to buy land east of the Mississippi or in New Orleans itself, or, if all else failed, to secure U.S. access to the river. Jefferson authorized them to negotiate up to $10 million” (“Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase”). The Louisiana Purchase was not anything out of the ordinary. The Jefferson Administration was already planning to buy the city of New Orleans from Napoleon, but the Foreign Ministers were
After studying astronomy, map-making, and other survival skills Meriwether made for the perfect explorer candidate. Lewis asked William Clark, a friend he made in army, to co-captain this journey with him. In mid-October Lewis and Clark made the final preparations in Clarksville, Indiana territory. It is here that they assembled the team that would accompany them on this trip. This team that was composed of Native American experts and men who were familiar with upper Missouri.
This also was linked slavery and eventually expanded throughout more states. The Florida purchase was a long ride. Thomas Jefferson went to the Florida territory which was owned by the Spanish. The Florida cession took place in 1819. Florida was bought for $5 million (about $117,783,464 today) by John Q. Adams.
The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of the Louisiana territory by the United States from France in 1803. The U.S. paid fifty million dollars and a cancellation of debts worth eighteen million dollars which averages to less than three cents per acre. The Louisiana territory included land from fifteen present U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The territory contained land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, portions of Minnesota, large portions of North Dakota; large portions of South Dakota, parts of New Mexico, the northern portion of Texas, the area of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The Louisiana Purchase was smart move by the United States.

Lewis and Clark Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were on an expedition lead by Lewis on the orders of Thomas Jefferson the president at the time. The expedition began in 1804 and it lasted two years because of the length and harsh travel. On there way they met an Indian named Sacajawea she helped take Lewis and Clark to their destination. Sacajawea was part of the Mandan tribe with her husband a fur trapper. There expedition became very famous and now I will tell you about it.
After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which ended the Seven Years War between the French and the British as well as all of their allies, the French lost claim to all of their land. The English being the winners of the war claimed the majority, and what they did not seize was given to the Spanish for their support and help in the war. In 1802 France and Spain signed a secret treaty called The Treaty Of Ildefonso. Once the treaty was fulfilled, Spain gave the Louisiana territory back to France (“Background”). Napoleon had interest in Louisiana for the purpose mainly to ship supplies to the French colonies in the Caribbean islands but also as a source of food and trade.
