The importance of wide reading in the growth of learners ' vocabulary is well recognized (Nagy & Anderson, 1984; Nagy, 1988). According to Scott and Nagy (1994): ". . . to promote the goal of vocabulary development, independent reading should be encouraged as a regular task." In fact, wide and independent reading is important to develop vocabulary of the learners because through this they come into contact of new vocabularies. Words like serenity, contaminate, stabilize, phenomenon, and anxiety are "necessary to make critical distinctions in the physical and social world in which we live" (Stanovich, 1992) and which assistance the learners to improve sensitivity to the subtleties in language and thought (Olson, 1986).

Every individual words have their own meaning, i.e. comfort and dishonor, but they can also be a part of those words which do not have any particular kinds of meaning, i.e. prefixes (un-, re-, dis-) or suffixes (-ful, -ness). To the learners this morphological understanding is critical when they encounter less frequent words in their reading. From the observation of Aronoff (1994), it becomes clear that those learners who have good command of morphology they will face less problems in their reading. According to Aronoff (1994) “most new words encountered in reading are morphological outcomes of known words. Readers who have good command of morphology, will be able to understand these words without giving much effort, especially at the time of …show more content…
It is very important for the learners to identify the words which are valuable for understanding the text, when they will find an unfamiliar word, if it established that the word is not important to understand the text, then they can follow these
By reading “How to Read Literature like a Professor” and “The Kite Runner”, the reader is aided in his or her ability to understand the true meanings behind the text. One is able to decipher how the act of coming together to eat can mean anything from a simple meal with family, to an uncomfortable situation that leads to anger or stress in an individual character. The reader is able to understand the use of rain or other weather in a novel to transform the mood and tone of scene, or understand the cleansing or destructive qualities that weather may have on the overall plot of the story. The use of illness can be transformed, as it can lead to the reader discovering veiled means behind tuberculosis, cholera, a simple cold, or even cancers such

Basically when a symbol is allowed to have meaning, it allows our brain to connect visual areas to both the conceptual and language areas within the brain. The linguistic principles helped the novice readers learn words while some groups shared pronunciations. Some students were required to use both phonics and semantics to aid in the recollection of reading and writing. However, the teachers in today’s society still debate the use of phonics vs semantics.
In Dwight MacDonald’s article, “Reading and Thought” he criticizes journalists on their lack of benefit and weakness in their pieces. MacDonald’s argument clashes with Henry Luce’s ideology of “functional curiosity”, the belief of having the “kind of searching, hungry interest in what is happening everywhere”. MacDonald wants to strengthen the practice of reading instead actually giving valuable information.
Goal: When reading a 5th grade passage and a word is unknown, Scott will be able to use the context clues, word roots, prefixes, suffixes and inflectional ending within a passage for 3 out of 4 trials. In reading, Scott is diligently working on expanding his vocabulary words. When Scott comes to a word that he doesn’t know he is able to figure out the meaning within the context, but he doesn’t know how to pronounce the word. He has been working on expanding on his vocabulary range of words that are of grade appropriate.

Reading is an essential life skill. The ultimate goal of reading is to comprehend and make meaningful connections with text. Therefore, the development of skills needed for reading begins at an early age and progresses through stages into adulthood (Chall, 1996). Within the early stages of reading development, children begin learning and acquiring these specific skills. Moreover, many of the skills learned during early childhood are constrained skills.

One of my favorite memories growing up is how much time I spent reading. Whenever I got a new book I couldn 't put it down. I remember that I would always read on the bus ride home. Reading was something that I liked to do. As I’ve gotten older my choice of books has changed alot, a different genre for each of my phases.
Introduction Lenses on Reading: An Introduction to Theories and Modelsis an excellent read. The authors bring a lot of useful information to not only the field of education but to the classroom. Throughout the book, the authors provided vignettes to show theoretical models in action which gives the reader a visual of how the theoretical model can be applied. The layout of the chapters was in chronological order which is was also helpful.
While traveling towards the path of seeping knowledge and analyzing critical ideals, we’ve become absent minded towards the components that gave us the ability to read. Since reading is always a part of our everyday routine, we have lost the idea that when it comes to learning how to read, we must start from the basics. From reading a case study, to reading a letter from a loved one, comprehension, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and oral language are the six essential components of reading. Before a child develops the ability to read, they begin to develop comprehension. Comprehension can be defined as the ability to understand.
In John Green’s Video, “How and Why We Read” Green states that reading allows us to be able to basically communicate with the dead. I agree with him because even after one dies their message is still portrayed in their book or article. Without people writing and documenting their thoughts and ideas down while on this earth our technology today would not be as advance as it is. Without these ideas being preserved through their writing we wouldn’t have been able to know what one was doing or trying to invent. One of John Green’s arguments was that with reading “we have a fuller understanding of lives other than your own”.
In this essay I will write about the strengths and weaknesses of perception as a way of knowing. Perception is the way we perceive the world through our senses. We use all five of our senses, which are sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch to understand the world and interpret it. We can then say it’s a Primary way of knowledge. We can also say that, because the senses is the way our body communicates, we have at least three more senses: kinesthetic sense, which is our awareness of our body’s dimensions and movement; vestibular sense, which is the awareness of the human’s balance and spacial orientation; and organic sense, which is the manifest of the internal organs (for example, hunger or thirst).
My experience as a reader isn 't as extraordinary as many, but I love to read.
