Blood may be thicker than water, but pride can be thicker than both blood and water. Pride can be life or death. Pride can be good or bad. In the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst the narrator’s pride ruled over his actions and decisions. The narrator’s pride lead to the death of his little brother, Doodle.

Similarities Between Anthem and Invictus Hardships are an inevitable part of living; however, our response to such hardships carries a greater significance. In Anthem by Ayn Rand and William Henley's “Invictus,” there is a portrayal of main characters that similarly challenge oppressive external factors. These works illustrate the strength of individuality and the importance of self-determination. Even though the works are represented in different ways, they deliver the same message: Characters are at a dark place in their lives, they determine not to give up, and they both convey the message of being unconquerable. Both works illustrate characters at a dark place in their lives.
Gwendolyn Brooks (1917- 2000) and Robert Hayden (1913-1980) are two Harlem renaissance poets who are experts in writing poems the detail both African American social experiences and universal human emotions. In Gwendolyn Brooks’s poem, The Explorer, the speaker tells the events of an unknown subject walking down a hallway searching for a quiet peaceful room in which to rest. In Frederick Douglass by Robert Hayden, the speaker voicelizes that when everyone receives freedom, then the great, historical figure, Frederick Douglass will be remembered eternally in the lives of everyday people. The songs of the slave represent the sorrows of his heart; and he is relieved by them, only as an aching heart is relieved by its tears.” (Douglass,
Poetry is a very unique type of writing. Poetry allows people to express their emotions in a way they feel comfortable. Every poem has a meaning to it, whether it is talking about food, interest, or a moment in their lives. Readers often mistake the poet as the narrator, although in many cases this is true. Many poets are the narrators and the poems are about their personal life.
In many works, the characters face problems in their society. Anthem by Ayn Rand and “Invictus” by William Henley is much like this. They are both beaten by society, start in dark places, and both are depressed, yet not afraid. In both works, the main characters are beaten by society.
Poetry is a type of literary work where authors can express their views on feelings, life or something they feel strongly about. Mark Strand and Larry Levis used poems to express their views on poetry. Emotions can be portrayed in a positive way, such as the happiness that is expressed in “Eating Poetry” by Strand, or in a negative way, such as the sad and depressing tone that is conveyed in “The Poem You Asked For” by Levis. Through characterization, imagery and point of view, the authors of these poems made the readers see poetry from different perspectives and emotions. Characterization is used in poetry to help the author bring to life or describe one of the main focuses of their writing, in this case, poetry.
Poetry is an important part of literature which conveys an author 's ideas across to the reader through the use of descriptive language. Poetry helps an author to express their inner emotions and often incorporates various poetic devices which enriches the text. Poetry gives the reader a different perspective and when read closely, can give the audience a look into the authors imagination. Likewise, poetic devices enhance the writing and can drastically change the mood of the poem, as well as, how the reader interprets the poem. Poetic devices are important in literature because they help to convey a message, add spontaneity to a poem, and give the reader a strong visual.
Poems are short meaningful pieces of literature that can be interpreted in multiple ways depending upon the reader at hand. That is what makes a poem unique compared to other literature pieces because in a poem the author tends to use figurative language to fulfill meaning behind their work. One poem “Love is a Sickness Full of Woes” by Samuel Daniel describes the pains of being lovesick. Love can either benefit us if nurtured and cared for, but if not tended to then let loose can ultimately hurt us. As to another poem “American Solitude” by Grace Schulman describes a life of solitude being most warming to the soul to ward off loneliness.
Poetry is a piece of literature where the author shares his ideas of a subject or person. He is attempting to allow the reader an understanding of his feelings regarding this subject. Most of the time poetry can be very pleasing to the ear; however, at times it can be written in a manner that is odd. Some poetry is written in a way that the reader can “hear”, “feel”, “see” or “taste” elements in the poem. Some poems may rhyme while others may not need to in order to convey the message.
“Poetry is ordinary language raised to the Nth power. Poetry is bonded with ideas, nerved and blooded with emotions, all held together by the delicate, tough skin of words,”(Paul Engle). Poetry covers all spectrums of life, whether it encompasses morality, love, death, or finding ones true self. When reading poetry one may stumble across pure brilliance, words so powerful they have the ability challenge the mind. Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman have that such gift, and are nothing short of illustrious.
In her poem, Erin represents many topics that are about embracing individualism. One example of symbolism is “poetry” in the line “people are not poetry.” (line 4). Poetry in this metaphor stands for many ideas. First, representing perfection.
