Wind characteristics
Wind differs from one location to another depending on the season, weather, the earth surface, etc. Being aware and understanding the wind characteristics help in building wind turbines and farm locations.
Wind speed
The most crucial characteristic in wind energy production is wind speed. Wind speed is determined by different aspects such as weather circumstances and geographical reason. The wind speed is measured through statistical data, and even though these data are accurate they do not have any obvious connection. Like for example, measuring daytime wind in some location can be different of that in another location. The wind can be strong at night in one location but weak at another.

Wind shear is referred to the distant where wind increase with the altitude over the ground. It is affected by many factors including season, geographical surrounding, time of day, height, etc. and the highest the wind turbine the more wind power it will capture.
Wind generation
Wind is the outcome resulting from the flow of air around the earth. Wind travels from high pressure areas to lower pressure areas. Larger quantities of wind can be captured by wind turbines when the wind is at a higher speed and that higher speed is obtained from a larger pressure gradient.
The production of wind is intricate due to a number of factors. Some of the major consequential factors are uneven solar heating, the Coriolis Effect, and local geographical conditions.
Uneven solar heating
Uneven radiation on the earth’s surface is the most significant of all factors. The inconsistency of the solar heat is often cased by four factors.
First, the earth is in continues movement around the sun. Sunrays hit the earth surface at different angles. The larger the angel the more intense the heat gets like at the equator, and the more acute the angel is the cooler it gets like at the poles. The earth consists of water and land and they both heat and cool at different rates, causing uneven heating.
Third, the earth is covered with various kinds of resources like metals, sand, rock, water, etc. These different materials soak up radiations at different levels causing high temperatures on some area like the desert and cold temps on iced lands and seas.
The fourth and last reason for uneven heating of radiation is caused by the earth’s geography surface. The different heights of the lands such as mountains, valleys, hills, etc. lead to totally different rays on the sun-drenched surfaces and shaded ones.

Imagine being outside in a gigantic thunderstorm with wind speeds up to 300 mph. Suddenly, violent, rotating columns of air extend from the sky, reaching all the way down to the ground. The funnel shaped twisters starts destroying large buildings and homes alike. They uproot trees, and vehicles race through the air for miles. These channels of intense wind are called tornados.

The sun’s rotation and revolution are the reasons for seasons which is also the reason for changes in temperature. In Chapter One we learned about the atmosphere specifically and without the atmosphere, there would be no changes in temperature.
On a sunny day, the land absorbs heat from the sun more quickly than the water does. The air over the land becomes warmer as some of this absorbed heat is radiated back into the air. The warmer air begins to rise, and the cooler air over the water moves in to take its place. At nighttime when the sun goes down, the land cools off quickly, but the water does not. The water radiates some of its stored heat into the air, and this warmed air begins to rise.

For example, if the pressure gradient is strong for that specific day, the isobars would be close together resulting in high winds.
