Did you know that 1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying because they are not courage’s and do not stand up for themselves? Courage’s means strength in the face of pain or grief. The novel is called Witness Hesse (2001). The story takes place in 1924 in Vermont. Some of the characters include Johnny Reeves age 36, Merlin van Tornhout age 18 and Sara Chickering age 42. The problem in this story is the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The main point of the story is when Johnny Reeves jumps off the bridge. No one noes if he is dead or alive, that is the biggest mystery in this story. By the end of the story the Secretary of State of Vermont rejects the application of the Ku Klux Klan to do business in the state. He says this when he is the the Klans car. “I never had been so out bullied before, but I thought about that Bobby Franks, and I looked at the drifter in my automobile, and I knew what Leopold and lobe had done to that boy and I got out” (94). This shows that merlin was out bullied. Therefor he is lacking courage in the beginning of the novel. After he was out bullied he decided to leave the automobile. He did not stand up for himself because he was not courage’s enough. The guy that was in the car also had the knife which probably made him leave. What is courage? The dictionary defines it as, “the ability to do something that frightens one”. But the belief that someone is doing something to frighten another seems inaccurate. We’ve all grown up knowing courage as an intangible fire that only comes from within and it helps guide you when you’re feeling doubtful or scared. This type of true courage is displayed by Piggy from the novel, Lord of the Flies, Martin Luther King Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail and Tim O'Brien in the short story, On the Rainy River.
Scotlin Young Senior Experience April 4, 2023 David Schmidt Reflection I have taken many of Dr. Schmidt’s classes and have gathered bits and pieces of his story due to such, but I am incredibly grateful that I was finally able to hear it in whole. He has been through much. I knew he was not fond of his father, but now I understand why. What he had to endure as a child is terrible. He suffered his father’s wrath and had to become a parental figure for his siblings.

Characters in various novels often have distinct personalities and defining traits to emphasize their role. These defining characteristics might not be as complex as a personality or a chronic mood. Many associated aspects of today’s protagonists and antagonists are the prevalent objects that accompany them. Courage is being brave and taking the risk of doing something. In the book Witness by Karen Hesse many citizens did not like African-Americans , Jews and Catholics. Leonora Sutter, a character in the book, is a 12-year-old who is African-American and everyday deals with many citizens not liking her because the color of her skin. Courage comes in many ways and Leonora keeping her head high and not paying attention to it is an example. There are many racist people in the town like the KKK.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.

When first reading the book, most people would say that courage is displayed by those like Jem, Scout, Tom, or Atticus.
Courage can be found where it is least expected. In her book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor uses Cassie as an example courage. Courage is the ability to do something, even though you are frightened of doing it, which Cassie shows a lot throughout the book. Cassie is a little girl, who is very smart, sassy, and courageous. She stands up for what she believes and helps others that need a voice.
IHands The main character of this story is a moderately aged, unattractive, bald man known not the inhabitants of Winesburg as 'Wing Biddlebaum. ' The most particular feature about Wing is his hands; they appear to have their very own psyche. Wing seems to be the favorite character of the story. In season, Wing picks strawberries as a profession, upwards of a hundred and forty quarts a day, and his fingers fly over the berries speedier than the shudder of wings.
