While women make up half of today’s workforce, they make seventy-nine cents to every dollar a man makes ("Pay Equity & Discrimination." — IWPR. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Sept. 2016.). To put it in perspective, for every $60,000 a man makes, a women only makes $47,400. The Equal Pay Act of of 1963 prohibited companies from determining pay based on the gender of the worker.
Analysis of “The Gender Pay Gap Is a Myth” In the article “The Gender Pay Gap Is a Myth”, Steve Tobak expresses his opinion on the difference in pay between males and females. The gap in pay between men and women has been a reoccurring controversy through many decades. While some say that women are generally paid at a lower scale than men, there are others that believe that this is a myth. The most shocking fact about this pay gap is that there are so many single mothers out there who need to feed, care for, and comfort their children. By only allowing women 77-80 cents on the dollar compared to men, it makes it much harder for these single
So many people have had issues with this wage gap, people with different colored skin to what gender they are. There are women who will get paid 75% of what men get paid just because of their jobs or because people think that they should get paid less because they get stuck with the housework or they are taking care of the elders. To me that is ridiculous, women and men shouldn’t be getting paid the way people see them. Most people think that men have harder jobs and women get the easier jobs but, that isn’t always true.
Even though many changes have been made in an effort to stop this problem, it is not fully over yet. Women are still being discriminated against in the workplace even when they do an equal job. Women should not have to endure some discrimination just because of their genders. It is unfair for employees to decide that women are worth less than men. This problem has caused many women to come forward and fight, but that alone cannot solve the problem.
The gender pay gap is the difference between earnings made by men and earnings by women. The Gender pay gap is generally due to various reasons, such as differences discrimination in hiring process, differences in negotiations for pay, differences in education choices, differences in the jobs men can go compare to women can’t easily go for. Some factors that cause the gender pay gap: • Women leave and re-enter the workforce to meet their family and children expectations • Low pay for some jobs, like childcare due to historical trends that continue • Lower educational levels of women due to traditions • Discrimination in the hiring process, compensation and promotion at workplace.

Women make less money than men do and it has been proven to be in general seventy eight cents to the dollar. Even when the comparison is within the same job field there is a difference. Black and Latino women make even less compared to white men. What’s even worse is the pay gap is not getting better.
The gender wage gap is outrageous. That gap is still significantly large in America, despite efforts that have been going on for decades to eliminate it. Women simply receive substantially less than men in this country. They are being discriminated against, and there is so much evidence to prove this. We cannot let them dismiss the evidence any longer.
The gender pay gap is a significant issue in the United States because it promotes institutional and internal sexism and the unfair treatment of human beings. An infamous statistic about the wage gap has been the 77 cent statistic, stating that for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns 77 cents. The statistic is calculated by, “...dividing the median earnings of full-time, year-round, working women by the median earnings of full-time, year-round, working men, all rounded to the nearest $100” (Glynn 2). This, however, represents males and females from all occupations, causing opponents to argue that, because it does not represent the gap between people who have the same job, a wage gap does not exist. Nonetheless, multiple studies have proven that a gender pay gap does exist within the United States.
The gender wage gap can be explained by the statistic; the female-to-male wage ratio of 2010 was 77% (Ferris & Stein, 2014 pg 255). This means that in 2010, the average female made 23% less in yearly earnings compared to men. Ethnicity can also be included to explain the wage gap. This can be explained by the statistic; Asian males make the most money compared to all other racial groups (Median, 2012). The symbolic interactionism view on gender can be explained as “Gender is learned through the process of socialization; gender inequalities are reproduced through interactions with family, peers, schools, and the media” (Ferris & Stein, 2014 pg 247).
Besides white women being paid less than men, more culturally diverse people are being paid even less than them. A USA today article on the gap says “The numbers were even worse for women of color, with black women earning 68% of what was paid to white men and Hispanic women’s pay amounting to just 62% of their white male peers, according to the IWPR.” click here for link. That is crazy considering segregation has ended, at least so we thought. Not only culturally diverse women, but all women are being paid less than men.
Why Are Women Paid Less? —— It Is Not an Issue Only About Discrimination That Simple According to a survey by North American Industry System(NAICS), based on average wages, all workers in 2014 including full-time and part-time, women earned just 75.3% compared to men. As more and more women enter the labor market, this issue is increasingly attached great importance, and whether this issue relates to discrimination is the biggest concern.
