I did my gender fieldwork observation at Walmart. I chose Walmart because I feel that this store would help me the best with this assignment. As I walked in the store, I saw a variety of different ethnicities from Caucasian to Latino to African Americans. There were also many different age groups, from babies to 60 and up. Women tend to me more emotional and emotionally expressive than men, men tend to be more reserved about emotional issues. In the process of becoming intimate one person shares information and feelings about themselves if the other person wants to develop or maintain intimacy with the other person they will then in reciprocate the same information and feelings about themselves. I believe that in having a belief in your biological nature of gender empowers you and also imposes a set understanding onto you. As result of believing in the biological nature of gender, you have the choice of whether or not you want to rebel against them or not, whereas if you were ignorant to them, perhaps you would naturally fall into your biological nature regardless. As Dr. Penner mentioned in lecture “As human beings we are unique, in that we can say yes and no to our instincts […] Saying no to instincts is often called: repression of our natural selves” (Penner, 2015). I believe that these biological impulses are performed through a critical self who is capable of deciding which urges to encourage and which to deny which is another example of repression of our natural selves.
Gender will help me in the future because there are obstacles in my life blocking me from achieving my goals but the negative energy turns into positive actions. Take for instance, when a woman finds out that she is pregnant and is about to have a child.
