Women Policing Research Paper

Is our justice system corrupted, racist or is it perfect? Did you know African Americans now constitute for nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population? This is probably the case because Blacks are incarcerated six times the rate of whites. African Americans are directly targeted and punished in a much more aggressive way than white people. I believe race, ethnicity and gender disparities play a large role in how our system is executed. To support my claims I will be talking about incarceration, pullover rates & situations and police training in great detail.

(http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu) Approximately 1.4% of women have administrative positions in law enforcement. There are more men that are sworn officers than women in Law enforcement. Statistics state that female police officers not to involve themselves in violence when they encounter issues with citizens. It has also been said that female officers are more prepared than male officers to handle disputes and people are less likely to be arrested once female police officers handle it. People have said that women are not strong enough to be police officers. Male police officers have expected women officers to fail. Male police officers say that women don’t do real police officer work.

Feminist criminology has been around since the late 1960's and started out centered on speculations brought upon traditional theories of crime. Most traditional theories didn't necessarily ignore women in the criminal justice system yet they generalized crime and what causes a person to turn to crime so that women who commit crimes are overlooked by the generalization. Not only are the numbers skewed when you look at gender in criminal justice offenders but there is also a certain bias in the criminal justice systems workers. In the movie Vera Drake there is a clear example of this when the investigator and the officer come into the movie. While watching you can easily assume that the female officer is treated and thought of much differently

What is the role of women and crime? A majority of criminology theories do not heavily place women’s stance of crime and, as the emphasis of lawbreaking is focused mainly on men, Feminist theory of crime on the other hand attempts to justify crime and the part of women in society. In the book Criminology Goes to the Movies: Crime Theory and Popular Culture by Nicole Rafter explains crime using multiple alternatives of feminist theory to explain how women in society consider crime based on the societal role of women. in the movie Thelma and Louise, it portrays the struggle of women, as the men in their world overwhelming show their power keeping both the main characters Thelma and Louise under control exhibiting dominance over them. There are many different stereotypes that police officers are faced with on a daily basis. They can come in many different forms. Police officers hold a very important position within our communities on a national level. They are under so much scrutiny that they are recorder the entire time while working for the respective county. They face certain stereotypes such as race, police force, harassment, and abuse of power as well as many more. In this essay I will go into further detail about the many stereotypes that the face on a day to day basis.

The topic for this research proposal project is on community policing, and the factors that are involved in determining if relationships between law enforcement and citizens in these neighborhoods are strained. In order to be successful, community policing must be built on trust, as both civilians and law enforcement must work hand in hand to protect their communities. If there is a lack of trust, then these programs becomes broken, and can therefore lead to other violence and criminal acts.

Police working personality is defined with the following terms: “authoritarian, conservative, cynical, dogmatic, efficient, honorable, hostile, individualistic, insecure, loyal, prejudiced, secret, [and] suspicious” (Schmalleger, 2015, p. 242). As I studied the norms for police culture this week, I found myself envisioning a rigid yet just, paternal-centric definition of officer. However, what I fail to see is the balance of empathy, care, respect, communicator, teacher, and selflessness often noted as successful characteristics of members of the force. Given that these terms were established in the 1960s offers a clue for the gaps – the impacts of females in law enforcement norms.

Feminist theory shows the ways of a gender structured life . This culture is also displayed in Crime and Punishment by Sonya and Dunya. Feminist criticism is a type of literary criticism that was well known in the 1970’s. Women would begin taking apart the classics and analyzing how the author portrayed women. The women in Crime and Punishment , especially Sonya and Dunya have a stronger state of mind and are able to handle the pressures and struggles of life better than the men in the novel.

Historical, underrepresentation of women in policing and the oppression these women face has been continuous and is still an issue that exists today.

With gang violence continually getting worse in the United States, prisons and their staff need to make sure they are ready to take on dealing with them. This includes having the right amount of staff so chaos doesn 't break out. It is important for everyone to be aware in these situations so in the long run the government systems do not actually make it worse (Trulson, Marquart, and Kawucha). Correctional officers and guards are an important reason to why prison gangs exist and are thriving. Officers use to be able to know the names of all the inmates, thus the inmates tended to behave better for they knew if they violated a code they would get in trouble. However, now with so many inmates, guards and officers have lost control and reputations

activities, the more efficient will be the outcome of separate events. The trafficking of dangerous drugs is not a local issue but rather national and international in scope. Drug trafficking groups and organizations do not limit their actions to any particular geographic boundary. Intelligence gathering and distribution to assist in identifying all levels of criminal trafficking organization are necessary for coordination and to stop duplication of effort. Body cams must be used more than they are because they can be used to document and record crucial moments in cases of excessive violence and force. “We need to unleash the full power of body cameras.(17 solutions to)”. If body cams were to be more widely used, more officers could be convicted of their crimes. Body cams could also be used as a deterrent to commit violence because the offers would know they would be found guilty. Police deviance is something that isn’t particularly talked about in the open. The reactions to certain actions by the police are either kept under wraps or blown up in the media to a dramatic extent. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the negative side of police deviance and the repercussions that follow. This will allow some light to be shown on the actions of officers that don’t follow the rules that they set out to uphold. If the peacekeepers aren’t keeping the peace, then the reasoning for having a position of power is null.

When we talk about the criminal justice system the public at large plays a very important role right from the prevention to reporting to the investigation of the case. The criminal justice system cannot achieve its goal without the active participation of the general public. If we take a look at the ancient police setup in medivial and ancient india we come across that there were various provisions for the participation of the public working with the police. The word police, inspires confidence inspires a sense of truse, security, commitment, and public service. From a time immorial the police have been a very intrigal part of the our social life. Be it the gupta period or the shivajian era, or the dark times of the east india company. Police has been omni present in the social order. One can not overlook the importance of police in the peaceful wellbeing of the state. But with the change in the attitude of the state towords its citizens the roll of police has also changed.
