In an important study of women Self Help Groups of Erasama Block in Jagatsinghpur District , Kahnu Charan Dhir (2012) concluded that women Self Help Groups were successful in improving their lives and were able to hasten the task of poverty reduction to a great extent. He also concluded that, it requires the hard work, patience of the members, animators as well as the catalysts to achieve this goal and that these factors are extremely important. He felt that it is the duty of the banks to expand the SHG movement and change the attitude of the poor, who are lacking in repayment capacity, thus helping and encouraging them. In another study undertaken by Dinesh Pant (2012), it was observed that poor people of the Himalayan region were facing …show more content…
They further stated that the SHGs become the basis for action and change in the lives of the women who are part of it. SHG’s also helped build a relationship of mutual trust between the promoting organization and the rural poor through constant and genuine efforts. SHGs have also been found to help inculcate among their member’s sound habits of thrift, saving and banking. The researchers also found that the attitude towards the quantum of saving was greater in urban areas than rural areas and that the majority of SHGs’ members in urban and rural have hundred percent savings. In fact, SHGs are acting as an alternative to the existing system of credit disbursement by banks. Klaus Deininger, Yanyanliu (2009) on the other hand found that SHGs have positive impact on consumption, nutritional intake, and helps the members in improving their assets and sense of security. Accumulation of necessary assets, improved financial condition was a positive change in the lives of these erstwhile poor …show more content…
Their paper assessed the governance issues in the operation of SHGs. They found that the main problem areas resulted due to the low financial base and also due to the absence of appropriate credit linkages. They also analyzed that non-provision of socio-economic incentives to members and lack of commitment to task accomplishment by the members of the group are also problem areas. Their paper aptly concluded with suggestions on policy lessons ,which can help in improving the implementation of rural self employment program in
Mississippi University for Women was established 1884 in the township of Columbus, Mississippi by the Mississippi Legislature. This institution is known for beginning the first all-female university in the United States. The association was formally named the Industrial Institute and College for the Education of White Girls and then renamed for the first time to Mississippi State College for Women in 1920. Over time, the college was changed for the third and final time to Mississippi University for Women to represent the development of the studies offered from the university, in addition to a graduate program in 1974. In the supreme court case, Mississippi University v. Hogan was the defendant in the case, being sued for not allowing admission
: In the year of 1979 in the state of Mississippi, Joe Hogan was denied admission into a single-sex education establishment called the Mississippi University for Women due to his gender. Hogan claims that MUW’s women-only policy violates the Fourteenth Amendment which holds the equal protection clause. MUW states that their policy has shown to have logical reasoning for its existence and claims to have no violation of his equal protection rights.
The records of the Chicago’s Women’s Club show that in 1891 Mrs. Perry Smith, a member of the CWC recommended the creation of a juvenile court so that children “might be saved from contamination of association with older criminals” (Platt, 2009, p. 128). Furthermore, other members of the CWC persuaded Judge Richard Tuthill to hold a separate court for children on Saturday mornings (Platt, 2009). The CWC assigned a representative to this special court who acted in the capacity of probation officer and adviser to the judge. Judge Tuthill was later quoted in the Annals of the Chicago Women’s Club as saying about the CWC that: The work of this noble organization was initial, persistent and effective.
In 1966, Betty Friedman wrote “The National Organization for Women’s 1966 Statement of Purpose”, a statement calling for “A more equitable division of labor within the family” (Foner 296-297) and arguing that despite the number of college educated women increasing, women were still relegated to the role of housewife and mother. In Betty Friedman’s statement, Friedman says that “true freedom” means having equal opportunity and freedom to choose between being a homemaker and holding a position in social, political, and/or economic life. Friedman’s idea of freedom is different from Ronald Reagan’s who, in his Inaugural Address, claims that freedom in the United States means choosing to limiting the power of the government and focusing on self-rule instead. While Friedman and President Reagan both argue that having freedom in the United States means having the freedom to choose, Friedman and Reagan have different views on the idea of freedom. When prices rise, consumers often move to cheaper, less-nutritious foods, increasing the risks of micronutrient defects and other forms of malnutrition, which can have long-term unfavorable effects on people’s health, development and productivity. Hunger
For example, food insecurity is considered a major social determinant of health. Food Insecurity occurs when people do not have access to adequate and nutritional foods necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle (Lombe et al, 2016). There is a direct relationship between one’s social economic status and the type of food they can afford. Households living below the poverty line lack the resources financially to afford healthier or organic food alternatives. What is more, they may not have the means of transportation to get to those supermarkets where healthier foods are sold.
1) Hi, I’m Valeria Tasinato, and I’m going to talk about Korean comfort women, and some photos related to them, shot during the battle of Mount Song, happened during World War II, and fought by Japanese soldiers against Chinese and American forces. But first, who were “comfort women”? With the term “comfort women” we refer to women who were sexually exploited by Japanese military during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Second World War. They were from territories occupied by the Japan’s Empire, and the majority of them were Japanese, Korean, and Chinese; but even Filipino, Taiwanese, Burmese, Indonesian, Dutch and Australian women were interned. 2)
DISCUSSION ABOUT MARGINALIZED WOMEN ISSUES DR.C.SUBBULAKSHMI Assistant Professor Centre for Women’s Studies Madurai Kamaraj university e-mail id: magarisha@gmail.com Marginalization is the social process by which a person or a group of people are made marginal or become relegated to the fringe or edge of society. It occurs when people is pushed to the edge of a society, usually as an effect of discrimination making the person standout and look different from everybody else. They consequently feel alone and left out from the rest of society.
This research would utilize education of women as the bedrock to women empowerment. The researcher would not delve into economic empowerment of the woman, but restrict this work to empowering a woman in such a way that she would be able to make certain decisions that affect her life and that of her family. 1.7 RESEARCH
Because of these issues, society should develop better strategies to help these people in need to eliminate the growing poverty level through the world. These strategies could include
According to Northoff (2007), nutrition is critical for a healthy and active life, but many people around the world still have no access to sufficient and nutritious food because of poverty and lack of nutrition education. Moreover, Riddle (2005) stresses that nutrition education is a key for developing the skills and motivation needed to eat well, and is especially important in situations where families have limited resources. The benefits of nutrition education and counselling can directly influence nutritional status, consequently, helping in attaining the millennium development goal (MDG) to reduce the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition (Garcia, 2008). In a recent preliminary study conducted by ENDESA in 2007, the way in which the mother’s educational level influenced malnutrition was observed. Statistics reveal that 15.4 percent of children of mothers with no education suffered from chronic malnutrition, while 9.4 percent and 4.7 percent in children of mothers with secondary or higher education levels respectively (Acevedo & Menendez, 2006).
According to the royal society, between1930 and 2010 the world’s population grew from 2 billion to 6.8 billion ,so the Continuing population causes a consumption growth and that means the global demand will increase over the next years and growing competition for land, water and energy will increase too(Black, 2010). Growth of population will affect on some countries ability to produce food especially in the poor developing countries, so improved nutrition is central to improved income generation, poverty reduction, and provide a good food quality. Lack of food quality has an impact on mother’s nourishment because they are more likely to give a birth, so mothers which are malnourished later will give birth of babies with a less healthier, growth retardation are associated with reduced physical activity, impairment of
The landscape, action, and documentary photograph as seen above presents the comfort women during the last months of World War II (August 27, 1945) inside a detention house on some part outside Manila playing mahjong. The identity of the photographer is unknown, however, it is likely that s/he belonged to the American forces basing on the following evidences: (1) The caption certainly reported for the American forces and at the same time, the picture has been preserved by the Bettmann Archives (located in United States), (2) Knowing that the picture was taken the last months after the war, the Japanese army was busy for the fights, thus, the photographer may have snuck in the detention unnoticed. As a result of this presupposition, the purpose in taking this is picture may be mainly to document the existence of (Japanese) comfort women in the Philippines and their lives under the Japanese forces. Taking a good look in the picture, it can be observed that the photo was lacking some details, especially on the colors in order to further understand their spaces in this picture.
