I am glad to be with you today as we hold the Women in Transportation Forum, one of the side meetings of the 9th Asia Pacific Economic Community (APEC) Transportation Ministerial Meeting being hosted by our economy, through the Department of Transportation and Communications, this year.

I welcome you, the delegates from the 21 APEC member economies, to this Forum.

Your presence today manifests your commitment to increase women’s participation in the transportation sector.

Ladies and gentlemen, during the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit, our Leaders recognized the pivotal role of women in the development and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific.

The various collaborative works will expand opportunities in the APEC Women in Transportation’s four pillar areas, namely: Education; Access to Jobs; Retention; and Leadership.

Your theme: “Navigating the Way Forward,” demonstrates your group’s determination to synergize and concretize this group’s efforts through various document outputs such as the Women in Transportation Framework: A Roadmap for Inclusion, which aims to inspire change and quantify the same and the compilation of best practices.

As we know, there is scarcity of data on women in transportation. Having a Framework on Data Collection helps in collecting information on the challenges, progress and opportunities for women.

During the Forum, you, the delegates, will have the opportunity to learn and share best practices through the lectures, panel discussions, breakout sessions and case studies. I am positive that through these, you and your respective economies will be able to highlight priorities, opportunities, risk, and challenges of implementation that will allow you to identify the best chances for success and to encourage further collaborative work among the …show more content…

One significant event is the conduct of the 1st Gender and Development Transportation Summit last November 2012. The Summit aims to define the transportation’s own gender and development agenda.

Through this Summit, the stakeholders in the public and private sectors were able to meet and agree to advance the cause of women to this sector that has been for so long not only male-dominated but also male-oriented. The different sectors, namely: air, water, and road signed different agreements, i.e. manifestos, MOA, and MOUs that seeks to enhance women’s transportation.

I am positive that our Focal Point, DOTC Assistant Secretary Dante M. Lantin, will be able to give you the details of our efforts as he discusses our economy’s experience later in the day.

Admittedly, our economy has a long way to go to fully realize the goal of inclusive mobility, equitable development, and the advancement of women in transportation.

Hence, we also hope to learn a lot from you as we wish you to learn something from the Philippine experience.
