During Progressive Era, there were many reforms that occurred, such as Child Labor Reform or Pure Food and Drug Act. Women Suffrage Movement was the last remarkable reform. This movement was fighting about the right of women to vote, which was basically about women’s right movement. Many great leaders – Elizabeth Cad Stanton and Susan B. Anthony - formed the National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Although those influential leaders faced hardship during this movement, they never gave up and kept trying their best. This movement was occurred in New York that has a huge impact on the whole United States.
The civil war had a very profound effect on America and what it has become today. With the civil war many changes took place such as 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. Women’s rights were put forth into motion. Along with Reconstruction laws being passes and the push back that these laws caused. During this time the south became even more divided and started to take things into account and create their own laws in regards to racism.

Women used many different ways to earn the right to vote in the Women's Suffrage Movement. The first method was parading in the streets. There was a parade with floats and lots of women marching holding signs demanding the right to vote. This method was used to get publicity for their cause. It was reported about in the newspaper. Many people watched the parade. The president read about it in the newspaper. Another method used was picketing in front of the White House. Women picketed all day long for months. The women did this so the President would see them every time he came in and out of the White House gates. It was also in the newspaper. A lot of people stopped by to read the signs.

Eventually, the police walked away giving the men the opportunity to attack. In the end, over 100 women were injured. Alice Paul, a young women fighting for rights, went on a hunger strike in prison to stand up for what she believed in. Paul and other suffragists were arrested and sent to Occoquan Workhouse, in Virginia. These women were fighting for their rights to vote, to be as equal as men. They suffered in crucial conditions while serving their time in prison.
Suffrage means to have the right to vote in political elections. This concept is an ideal meaning for women throughout history, especially for the women population between late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Women suffrage commenced at the Seneca Falls, which later on had escalated to Unions, then led to the 15th and 19th amendment. Of course, the men of that time had belittled the women who believed that they were more than merely the traditional mothers and wives. Although, suffrage is not only just for females, but to the Black population too; both males and females. With determination and the passion burning within them, women and African Americans alike, had reached the right for suffrage.
Life for women in the 1800s began to change as they pushed for more rights and equality. Still, men were seen as better than women, this way of thinking pushed women to break out from the limitations imposed on their sex. In the early 1800s women had virtually no rights and ultimately were not seen as people but they rather seen as items of possession, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that women started to gain more rights. The Civil War actually opened opportunities for women to gain more rights, because with many of the men gone to war women were left with the responsibilities that men usually fulfilled during that time period. Susan B. Anthony, a woman who was arrested for illegally voting in the president election of 1872, in her “On Women's Right to Vote” speech, argues that women deserve to be treated as citizens of America and be able to vote and have all the rights that white males in America have. She begins by introducing her purpose, then provides evidence of how women are citizens of America, not just males by using the preamble of the Constitution, then goes on about the how this problem has became a big problem and occurs in every home in the nation, and finally states that women deserve rights because the discrimination against them is not valid because the laws and constitutions give rights to every CITIZEN in America. Anthony purpose is to make the woman of America realize that the treatment and limitations that hold them back are not correct because they are citizens and they deserve to be treated like one. She adopts a expressive and confident tone to encourage and light the hearts of American woman. To make her speech effective, she incorporates ethos in her speech to support her claims and reasons.
Women Suffrage movement began more active after 1894. For example, “In New York City, Josephine Shaw Lowell and Mary Putnam Jacobi formed the Woman Municipal League." (Dubois, 189) This organization was primary focusing on the corruption of public. “By the early 1900s, moreover, the spirit of political reform in New York City spread beyond the elite.” (Dubois, 189) For instance, African American women also began their suffrage by forming the National Association of Colored Women in 1903. If you had lived in the 1800s, would you have fought for Women’s Rights or would you have decided to be a bystander? Throughout history women have always been ruled by men. At the start of the 1800s, women would have had only one right and that was being a housewife. Although women had no rights, women later raised their voices in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. It gave women the right to vote which had an enormous impact on American society and culture and subsequently lead to other major benefits for women.

The women’s suffrage movement was a very difficult time for these women at the time. On June 20, 1908 is when the suffrage day happened and everyone was there including the women who wanted their right to vote. The women went through some difficulties to get their right to vote. Speeches were being given that day. Four years later a march happened. This march was to celebrate what was going on between the women. Everyone said that the march was enormous. It was so big that only certain people were allowed to go and they had to wear certain colors and rode in carriages. This was to show who was supposed to be there and who was not supposed to be there (“Adams”). The women did not stop there.
The declaration of independence states that all men and women are created equal. This document, along with the constitution, is what the administration of the United States was founded on. The men who created these documents were citizens striving for equal rights and representation in government. Ironically, these rights the founding fathers worked so hard to create for themselves were not granted to women in their newly established nation. Namely, many historical events were accomplished by women or involved women; however, they aren't taught in high school.
