For my practicum experience I was at the Sacred Heart Medical Center ICU (2S). The Sacred Heart ICU takes a variety of different patients – traumas, strokes, septic patients, etc. To guide my time on this unit I was assigned a nursing preceptor. Mackensie Rockstrom, who was with me for all but 28 of my total 136 hours, has been a nurse for five years. Two and a half of these years have been spent in the ICU, the other two on the 8th floor, a neurological floor, of Sacred Heart.
Cynthia Colllinsgru began her career at Ammons Shoprite in 2007 , She was 18 years old . In 2012 she was promoted to Department Manager . Cynthia was chosen to learn CGO (computer generated ordering ) and the entire inventory system and then asked to run HABA (the Health and Beauty Aids ) department . In order to excel in this new position , Cynthia attended the Dale Carnegie Leadership Immersion training provided by Ammons on site during work hours .
The next day I could hardly wait to get to the hospital. The surgery lasted seven hours, which was longer than planned, but I didn't mind. The whole surgery was amazing from start to finish. The nurse put me right behind the head of the patient on a stool, so it was
At first it was confusing because she talked a lot about Essentrics first and kept saying she would explain it later on in the book. She was hyping the Essentrics program a lot in the beginning saying how thirty minutes a day can help pain, slow aging, heal injuries and so on. After reading the first couple of pages, the book was getting repetitive and I wanted to know what the thirty minutes exercise were already. On the other hand the hype of Essentrics was actually worthy because that was her hook in the book. Reading the first couple of pages in the first chapter was interesting and deep explaining in a cellular level how our bodies work.
As I reflect on my medication pass, I not only realize the lessons I learned, but also the things I will take with me with me for a lifetime. This was quite the experience of learning and lessons to become a registered nurse, so as I began my day, I began by looking up my patient’s medication. I would be passing in the MAR – on the computer. This is where I proceeded to check for allergies (medicine and relevant food), this should be done every time you give a medication. The instructor said ok are you ready?
I have lived in Pensacola, Florida for my whole life. I have lived in the same house since I was six years old, and before that I lived in an apartment by my elementary school. I went to Jim Allen Elementary School where I spent kindergarten through fifth grade. I had to be homeschooled for half of my first-grade year, and half of my second-grade year because I was going through cancer treatments as a young girl. I then went to Ransom Middle School for sixth and eighth-grade because I had to be homeschooled again in seventh grade due to having a major surgery.
In this First Clinical Practicum, it is incredible that I have spent 8 weeks to work in medical and surgical wards. Standing out of laboratory, all new things in the wards are curious to me so I am aggressive to explore and grasp every chance for study. Apart from many psychomotor skills I have learnt and applied, I found something I have to improve for my further nursing field. In this reflective journal, I would like to focus on one significant item which is communication. Kimberly B. Chapman (2009) mentioned that as healthcare providers try to accomplish more in less time, the relationships between patients and providers-and among partners-naturally suffer.
As a student nurse and pharmacy technician, I have interacted with many populations. These experiences has allowed me to sharpen my interpersonal skills. From working with patients at Howard Hospital and Providence to working with the residents of Northeast D.C., I can contribute knowledge and experience of the people that inhabit the D.C. community. This will allow me to make contributions when exploring the topic of mind, body and medicine like I could have done when my father was displaying symptoms of stroke.
I didn’t really feel as part of the team through most of this experience because I wasn’t competent to complete many tasks but one of the nurses did try to get me involved when things were under control. She suggested that I draw up 40ml of saline into 5ml syringes if I felt comfortable doing so. Under her supervision I completed the task successfully and even though I didn’t contribute a lot I still felt good about getting involved and then I felt more competent. According to Penderson and Sivonen (2012) it takes courage for student nurses to accept tasks that get them involved in patient care, even if it is something very simple. I felt like I had contributed to Katie’s care.
I went from looking like I had five heads when I would hear my coworkers discuss things. To becoming proficient when providing the necessary information needed for an insurance company to pay for a patient’s office visit, and not questioning myself when needing to determine the medical code that went along with a
We kept the program floating until our current Administrator, Walter Rodgers, was hired and quickly changed gears altogether. Within months we had increased our weekly attendees from 15-20 to 40-50 children. By spending my
Pt stated that she had been doing the home exercises that the OT had given her a couple of visits prior. The pt said that she “is done with OT after this visit because they have helped her reach her goals.” (O) Objective Pt range of motion in extension and flexion of the wrist was WNL, but her ulnar and radial deviation was a couple of degrees short.
I arrived at Woodruff Park on an early Friday morning; an interesting aspect of the homeless society is that many people converge together so that they do not feel alone. During my first visit, there was a homeless couple sitting by a bench. One older lady joined them in a very tranquil manner. Despite the racial tension transpiring in this country, blacks and whites were in Woodruff Park mingling together with smiles on their faces. At one point, I even started smiling since the scene was full of bliss.
