There have been several protests on college campuses in recent weeks. The students are making several demands ranging from the forced resignations of staff, free education, racial equality, and even the call for the campus police to no longer be allowed to wear body armor. Recently there is a movement called #studentblackout that is sweeping across college. At Princeton University, a large group of protestors went into the President 's office and refused to leave until their demands have been met. They are trying to force the President to sign their demands forcing the college to acknowledge the racist legacy of Woodrow Wilson. They are demanding the school change the name of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs
During the Progressive-Era, 1890-1920, Presidents Roosevelt and Wilson played major roles in making this time period a success (Schultz, 2014). Each wanted the United States to be more aggressive when it came to international affairs. They felt being timid was not the way to accomplish this goal; however, instead, they set out to increase our military force extensively. President Roosevelt is the first major player accomplished this goal merely 3 years prior to the end of his presidency. By 1906 the U.S. had the 3rd largest military in the world.

The East Los Angeles School walkouts and Chicano Moratorium are two historical examples that emphasize forms of Chicana and Chicano resistance that have been examined in varied ways, particularly through print media such as the Los Angeles Times and La Raza. In 1968 more than 10,000 Chicana and Chicano students walked out of schools in East Los Angeles to protest inferior educational conditions and demand equal access to quality education. Then, in 1970, the Chicano Moratorium, which intended to be a peaceful demonstration to call for social justice and protest the Vietnam war, transformed into a display of police repression and brutality that left several marchers dead. They mostly consisted of writers, politicians, and famous social advocates. One of the famous progressive politicians was Theodore Roosevelt.
Woodrow Wilson, through his tenure as President of Princeton University, as Governor of New Jersey, and then in his two presidential terms, demonstrated strong broad based leadership. Although political ineptness and a lack of charisma sometimes marked his career, Wilson generally, compensated with a pervading morality and intellect. So it was with his greatest achievement, the Fourteen Points—and most especially—the League of Nations to which he committed his life after 1918-1919. Yet, in an era in which the Congress fiercely guarded its war powers, the Senate, was under thee powerful Republican influence. The failure of the US in joining the League is attributable to the power of both the liberal and conservative opposition.
The “Trust-Busting” Progressive President In the late 19th century, the idea of progressivism began to emerge from rapid industrialization and urbanization. Muckrakers and other progressive citizens created a hunger for truth after exposing scandals and corruption within healthcare, politics, and businesses. The people of this era responded to the economic, social, and political problems that arose. Progressive presidents were elected to office to create change in America.
After a meeting with the Board and Protestors, no resolution was in sight and many protestors marched to the Capitol spontaneously. The three demands were that Elizabeth Zinser must resign and a deaf president put in her place, Jane Spilman must step down from The Board of Trustees chairperson, deaf people must make up of 51% on the Board of Trustees and there would be no repercussions on any person involved in the protest. On Tuesday people were allowed on the campus and free to do what they wanted, but rallies were held all day long. World War I was a war that Americans entered reluctantly, and a war which led to the replacement of progressivism by liberalism. Liberalism arose from a feeling of entrapment brought by the various regulations on industry and society, and embraced individualism to create a sense of liberation. Cars, especially the Model T, played a massive role in this by giving mobility to men and women, and creating a sense of freedom and independence (McGerr 228). The phonograph, psychotherapy, sports, amusement parks, dance, and music were other individualistic concepts, which provided pleasure. African Americans of the period began migrating to cities like Chicago, and enjoyed certain individualistic freedoms like music and boxing (McGerr 257), but were also banned from many theaters and places of leisure, and often created their own theaters.
President Woodrow Wilson was the last of the Progressive Presidents and as such caused great economic, political and social change. He served between 1913 and 1921 during which he imposed economic change through reforms, both national and international political change and a change in the role of women, giving them the right to vote. The effects of Wilsons presidency created abundant change within American society that had long lasting impacts. Political change was imminent in Wilsons second term as he was given emergency presidential power to, in some cases, bypass Congress, to speed up the law-making process. For example, he imposed the Selective Services Act in 1917 which authorised conscription in the US so that the military could be built up quickly and would not have to rely wholly on volunteers; according to Khan Academy this was well received by the American public as they were incredibly patriotic and believed it was their responsibility to support their nation, as such few men dodged.

She states that students are committed to eliminating problems in society by standing up, which takes a lot of strength (Cutterham 2). There were also protests against Condoleezza Rice speaking at Rutgers University because students disagreed with her views. Cutterham also uses the example of O’Neil’s Spectator article. He states that universities should share the goal of protestors: to create an environment where no one feels threatened or belittled. The Progressive was a period in which new crusaders, also known as the “progressives”, engaged in combat with their society’s monopolies, corruption, and social injustice in order to “strengthen the State” and “use the government as an agency of human welfare.” This motif of these reformers was seen throughout this time and ultimately produced success stories but nonetheless fell to several limitations. As one discovers, Teddy Roosevelt known to history as the “Trust-buster” played a prominent role in launching a triumphant end to dishonest monopolies and trusts. In addition to corralling the corporations during this time, Roosevelt also impacted society with his reforms to assist the common man consumer, gaining initial inspiration from The
Woodrow Wilson, the twenty-eighth President of the United States, is well renowned for many accomplishments; of particular importance is being credited as the father of Public Administration. Although he argues for many different ideas and concepts, his end goal is always for the benefit of the people. This particularly resonates in his 1887 essay; The Study of Administration. In his critically renowned essay, The Study of Administration, he details his concepts of and for public administration.
Progressives formed many acts to oppose the problems that industrialization created. Such as poor working conditions and the power of big businesses. The presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson were the main progressive presidents. Their management of the United States brought great change political change in America.
The idea of free speech on college campuses and the complications of it stem from those on campuses expressing views that don’t align with popular views. Implications for students who use the idea of free speech as a method for hateful actions and comments should be reprimanded, but the question remains as to whether schools should enforce tougher limitations. The freedom of speech on college campus expands to the freedoms of religion, assembly, press, and protest as well. Freedom of expression allows students to show their own political, social, and cultural views. Removing freedoms of speech and expression have consequences deeper than surface issues.
