I am excited about the opportunity to share my insights and work with peers and faculty members to create positive change in the healthcare field. Comparatively, during my internship with the assessment team at California University of Science and Medicine, I was given the incredible opportunity to understand administration, team management, and technical skills comprehensively. Working with the medical school's software systems, I organized and delivered student assessment activities and information. In order to communicate effectively with delivery teams, I learned to collate large datasets and present them

From the very onset of my undergraduate career, I knew two things: I wanted to be a physician and I wanted to return home to work in my community. Growing up in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, I was brought up in a rural, medically under-served area. Lack of facilities, short handed manpower, and patient ignorance of medical information all contribute to a rather rocky health care system within the community. Once I arrived to Xavier, I quickly joined a research lab, and have gained over 1000 hours of lab work. Additionally, through my research experiences, I gained immense amounts of both scientific and medical knowledge.

While attending the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, I plan to study kinesiology and exercise science. As a former athlete, and someone who has seen what other athletes have endured, my biggest goal for myself and my career is now to make a difference in the lives of athletes and subsequently, those they inspire. I plan to work as a strength and conditioning coach or an athletic trainer for a college or professional sports team. My mindset, work ethic, and the excellent resources available to me through this university will help me achieve this. Additionally, the University of Hawai’i offers a unique opportunity for me to see the world outside of my hometown.
I wish not to base my level of successfulness on the amount of money I earn or receive, but on the amount of heart I give to others and my work. Over the next thirty years my success will be reflected by a number of significant milestones that will lead me into a career in the music industry. The hard work and values my Ghanaian immigrant parents instilled in me has led to my academic success as I was constantly reminded of the value of education. Pushed to do better everyday, my parents were successfully able to build up a strong work ethic in me.

Through my studies of human expression and its reflection of how people deal with world events in different ways, I developed sensitivity to other worldviews that continues to prove useful through my daily interactions with people of different backgrounds. I have learned that just like art, medicine involves pattern recognition and derives insight from experiences. Similarly, what I especially enjoy about being a medical assistant is interacting with patients on a daily basis and getting to be a part of their medical experiences, even if it is just by lending an ear. The experiences on my path to a career in medicine have made me want to make a real, tangible difference in the lives of those around me – a difference that leaves my patients in a better condition than they were in before I met them.

For the majority of people, pursuing a career in the medical field is a career which should be avoided at all costs. Whether this profession is a surgeon, a nurse, or a psychiatrist, the long hours of study and work (which are necessary for these occupations), are not in most people’s definition of a “fun job.” In addition, after the long years of study come to an end, the most feared moments arise, the time to pay student loans. Nevertheless, none of these obstacles intimidated Juan Delgado in order to pursue his dream as a healthcare professional, more importantly, to help our community. Delgado, the oldest of two, was born on December 3rd,1991.
“Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty” (Albert Einstein). To me, this quote says that all living things should be treated with respect. I believe that we should treat nature as we should treat others, with compassion. I would like to incorporate this passion I have, into my career. Like nature, my family is also very important to me.
My 17 years of age have taught me so much, yet so little. I have learned how to become an active member of society through charity endeavors, a good worker through employment, and -until recently- an outstanding student. Life has taught me much about who I am, and who I could be all with the method of trial and error. It certainly has not been easy coming to where I am now.
