What does it mean to bully someone? When someone is bullied, they are being negatively oppressed by another student with a higher advantage. A child who is consistently bullied has low self esteem and can have negative thoughts that may result in life threatening decisions. Bullying at school causes thousands of students everyday to be afraid to learn in what is supposed to be a safe environment. This problem affects all students and we need an efficient and valid solution. When a student is bullied, it affects every aspect of their life and can cause many problems that may result in severe ways. When bullying occurs, many people don’t know the best ways to handle the problem, resulting in a bully getting their way. The actions of students, teachers, and the community can reduce bullying at school. One way that bullying can decrease as a whole is by the actions and decisions of students. The article, “Working in the Community” defines how the community can affect bullying. “Community members can use their unique strengths and skills to prevent bullying wherever it occurs… Hearing anti-bullying messages from the different adults in their lives can reinforce the message for kids that bullying is unacceptable.” The community outside of school can help kids feel wanted and welcome. When a kid feels included in the community, they feel happier and more confident in themselves, positively affecting their outlook on school and life. A student can become a bully if treated unfairly outside of school and begin to bully other students, harming all and benefiting no one. Yet, if the community helps build a safe environment to help kids learn, then less bullying will occur.
