We have already explored how infection control can reduce these risks but it is always worth reminding yourself of these.

Since the end of the Civil War, powerful men, referred to as captains of industry, formed trusts to control markets. They did this through their collusion, price-fixing, and anticompetitive activities, which took a toll on competition and innovation. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was passed to combat the harmful effect of trusts which the captains of industry controlled by creating an uneven playing field through their size and scope. The act passed with strong public support however due to the government’s inability to regulate these companies, even after passage of the act, stronger measures were introduced and passed to help protect and open markets to competition.

This learning actively greatly assisted in building my confidence, which I required in order to be successful in the new graduate RN role. The entire audience expressed immense appreciation of her saying, due to its relative realism and exposition of the truth. Professional is “a person who acts professionally is conscientious in actions, knowledgeable in the subject, and responsible to self and others” (Pottery & Perry, 2015, P. 3). Professionalism in the workplace, to me as the nurse, means that someone can think critically, provide safe quality care, communicate therapeutically with the patient, and has standards of accountability and punctuality. Critical thinking is “the active, purposeful, organized, cognitive process used to carefully examine one’s thinking and the thinking of other individuals” (Pottery & Perry, 2015, P. 1178). If the nurse thinks critically, he or she will able to provide safe quality care and excellent nursing judgments, respect themselves and others and prioritize care needed.
There are many different definitions of workplace culture. Charles Handy an Irish author/philosopher specialising in Organisational Behaviour and Management famously said that, “Culture is the way we do things around here,” but if someone was on the outside looking in how would you explain that to them. Would you have to be working there a long time yourself before you could see “how things work around here”. Because culture in an organisation is what makes it unique, it’s the personality, the attitudes, and the way we interact and relate to each other these are the things that attract the best and Brightest talent to a company. So, if an organisation has a “strong, positive, clearly defined and well communicated culture with strong core values” (Deloitte) that company is onto a winner.
