The short story “Harrison Bergeron” takes place in 2081 in the United States. Everyone and everything is now equal due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments of the US constitution. Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. was published in 1961 and this sotry is a normal case of the author’s capability to blend science fiction and satire. It is the best useful story of regulation of absolute equality ever composed. In this paper, I will be highlighting the Harrison Bergeron as a picture of socialism and communism, considering the equality rule of the teachings to uncover the absurdity (Joodaki & Mahdiany). Harrison Bergeron tell the satire of the misconception of what equality involves. Vonnegut has written this story to tell that all people have strengths and weaknesses which make each of them uniquely individual (Gradesaver.com).

Individuals breathe life into a society, they shape it with their ideas and beliefs. However, when these beliefs become corrupted, do individuals have the power to change it?. In the short stories “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, and the theories of enlightenment philosophers, individuals can not change society. Tessie Hutchinson from “The Lottery” tried to persuade her village that the long-standing tradition was wrong, but faced death soon afterwards. On the other hand, Harrison from “Harrison Bergeron,” tried to overthrow society's ideas, through atrocious actions. The philosophers such as Locke and Rousseau, believed that the governors of society should be responsive and secure rights for the people. With this intention in mind, an individual wouldn’t change society because it is supposed to be built around the individuals. Thus, individuals can not change their society because they don’t have power in numbers, they will be condemned by society if they try, and they shouldn’t need to change society if it is built to represent.

In Kurt Vonnegut’s story “Harrison Bergeron”, we can see this idea shown through the reader’s connection with Harrison. Vonnegut uses the main character of the story, Harrison Bergeron, as a symbol of empathy by allowing the reader to relate to his desire for individuality.

The theme of this story is that no one should be forced to be equal, since everyone is their own special person. The story describes George and Hazel Bergeron who both have different living perspectives. In the life of 2081 everyone is expected to be equal, because of this way of living George’s intelligence makes him differ from everyone else which  is weighed down by earpieces that vibrate a sound. “Harrison Bergeron” is a unique story, in the sense that it takes place in 2081 in a dystopian society where everyone is equal. No one could be smarter, better-looking, or more athletic than anyone else. They are made equal with mental handicap radios for those who are intelligent, hideous masks for those who are beautiful, and heavy weights for those who are strong.

Admit it, one time you were bored or sat down with nothing to do and couldn’t help but imagine how life would be if everyone was equal, don’t even try denying it, you’ve thought of that at least once in your life, but as any good writer would do, they’d write their thoughts down and turn it into a story, that’s exactly what Kurt Vonnegut did.

The story, Harrison Bergeron really shows the importance of diversity and for every individual to have a right to be unique. The government trying to make every thing completely fair is actually unfair to people who can 't get any excitement in a world like this. Limiting peoples thinking will also strongly slow any advances in technology, maybe even to a stop, so they might never solve some of the very important problems they face. Same with strength, if someones is in danger to an animal or a malfunctioning machine they will need to be able to escape. So really a world thats completely fair is impossible to create.

One common afternoon in the year of 2081, when everyone was equal, Hazel and George Bergeron were in their lovely living room watching television. Suddenly, a news reporter with a severe speech impediment came on. After trying many times to say, “Good morning ladies and gentlemen,” he handed it off to a ballerina who read, “Harrison Bergeron, age 14, has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.” However, in this short story “Harrison Bergeron”, Kurt Vonnegut uses irony, shift and mood, and allusion to illustrated haw society would be if everyone was under the law of equality.

I would like to explain a theme from two short stories, the most dangerous game and also Harrison Bergeron. One of the main themes out of these stories is pursuit of perfection. I chose this theme because it a very informative theme in these stories. I also chose these stories because I found most examples so I can further explain this theme. I can also further explain another theme that is the challenging of authority and tradition between the stories Harrison Bergeron and the last dog.

Many people in 2081 believe that Harrison’s ability will be more powerful and better than others. He is literally weighed down by so many things from being himself. The Handicapper General placed gadgets to keep him normal like the rest. That caused many people the be afraid of him. Harrison Bergeron is a not a threat to society; he is a hero.
