However, when this constant feeling of hopelessness is carried into every day to day life, it can become a serious mood disorder. Clinical depression is a disorder of feeling constant sadness, anger, and frustration, affecting one’s mood, health, and wellbeing. Depression is widespread, affecting 1 in every 33 children, and 1 in every 8 adults, totaling to 14.8 million American adults. Depression Depression is the feeling of severe despondency and dejection or a mental condition. Being depressed is a normal reaction to a lost life, struggle, or injured self esteem. Based on the reading for this week "The Americanization of Mental Illness" and the TedTalk "Depression: the disease of civilization": In my opinion the term “depression” is use nowadays to any situation in which a person feel stress or with pressure in their life. The industrialization of this term is changing how people see their problems in life. I have to agree with the fact that maybe depression would be less common if it had not been industrialized. Is turning to be a common term used even in our daily’s conversations without knowing what it really means.

Depression for the Nondepressed We know that depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, specifically a lack of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. This chemical imbalance can occur as a result of a traumatic event, stressful situations (e.g. illness, abuse, or conflict), medications, or genetic predispositions, and new contributing factors are being discovered every day. Because our brain dictates the way we perceive things, these chemical imbalances make the seemingly insignificant, significant; the obvious, hidden; the easy tasks, like running marathons in the middle of summer in a desert. Environmental factors affect the brain’s chemistry, and certain triggers can cause a wave of depression to hit you out of nowhere.
