G- Tom Robinson Y- Honest R- Went into detail R- Sounded like he told the truth Y- Respectful R- How he worded his words R- His arm G- Tom Robinson is honest and respectful In chapter 18 the reader can conclude that, Tom is honest and respectful. He is honest because he was telling the truth. I concluded that because he went into detail of what happened that day. He said that Mayella needed help with the door hinges and getting something on the top shelf. Tom asked were all the kids were and Mayella said they were out. Tom sounder very strong with what he said in the witness stand. He did not stumble or stutter when he was talking. Tom was also very respectful in the stand. When Tom had to give the oath, he had to use his right hand. He used it because his left hand was handicapable. He turned to the judge and said “sorry your honor.” Tom had to word his words very carefully because of some of the Jim Crow laws. He did very well, he said ma'am and sir when he was in the stands. One reason could be, she simply did not want to get in trouble. One Jim Crow law states that if a black person would offer anything to a white people that would be considered rape, and vise versa. Tom Robinson says that Mayella Ewell hugged him in his house. If a black and a white were seen together alone and opposite gender it could be considered rape if someone else saw. Mr. Ewell saw Tom and Mayella in the house together. Another reason that Mayella could have lied was because she wanted to protect her dad, Mr. Ewell. Tom Robinson said that Mr. Ewell looked through the window and saw Mayella hug Tom. Then Tom said that Mr. Ewell came in and called Mayella a slut and started to punish her. She most likely did not want to lose Mr. Ewell because she lost her mom a while back. If Mayella would have lost her dad she would have had to take care of all the
