The effectiveness of Yaz compared to female condoms in the prevention of unwanted pregnancy

With the advent of birth control pills in the 1960’s, women have been given a great degree of power to choose when they want to conceive and determine how much space they want between their pregnancies. However, faced with so many choices of contraceptive methods, the question of which is more effective and convenient has always been on the minds of experts and women. It is not a simple task to examine and compare the effectiveness of each method, since there are many different classes and examples including barrier method and hormonal contraception. The level of effectiveness greatly depends on how these individual methods are used, …show more content…

The Health line stated that certain medications such as rifampin, anticonvulsants, oral yeast infection medications, St.John’s worth and certain HIV medications can interfere with the effectiveness of the combined pill. The National Health Service recommends that women need to take the pill at the same time every day, because if they fail to do this or if a pill is missed, pregnancy can result. Women experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhoea while on the pill could also become pregnant (2014). Another general warning is that persons taking combined oral contraceptives should avoid antibiotics. “Although package inserts of both broad-spectrum antibiotics and COCs warn of potential COC failure with concomitant antibiotic use, it has been argued that antibiotics other than rifampin do not seem to significantly affect plasma levels of COC steroids, and women taking COCs and antibiotics concomitantly do not appear to have a greater risk of breakthrough pregnancy” (Anderka, Hernandez, Jon-van don Berg, Mitchell, Toh, 2010). In this study, the researchers did not find a significant relationship between the simultaneous use of antibiotic with combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and the risk of unplanned pregnancy among users of …show more content…

Neither the oral contraceptive method nor the female condom provide 100% protection form unplanned pregnancy. In a Public Health Report (2010), it was suggested that if every woman using highly effective contraceptive methods combine this with the use of a condom, only about 20 percent of abortion and unwanted pregnancies would occur. This means an annual decline in unwanted pregnancies by 786,000 and a drop of approximately 152,000 in abortions. The combination of condoms with highly effective contraceptive methods such as Yaz has often been included as a means of safety against unplanned pregnancy especially if the user has missed a pill. For patients taking Yaz, the internet drug index, RxList suggested that, if a woman misses two active pills for two consecutive days in week one or two of taking the pill, they must take two pills per day for the next two days. Then take one pill per day for the remaining pack. It is advised that they use back-up contraceptive for at least seven days after the missed pills.
