The term “Your Majesty” was and is used to address a king or queen in England. Its use in example (1) colours the dialogue with English culture. But in the Chinese version it is rendered into “启禀皇上” (qi bing huang shang), which immediately brings the audiences back to ancient China to watch a dialogue between the emperor and his subject. The translation of “Yes, Your Highness” into “臣在” (chen zai) in example (2) reconstructs a similar situation of conversation as if it were taking place in feudal China’s imperial palace. Here, the restoration of the authentic Chinese cultural context is based on diction. The translation does not only use the language used by ancient Chinese people but also chooses the language which is most appropriate to the …show more content…
This kind of translation expands the scope of reference of “children” and the method may be labelled generalization. The expression “A single grain of rice can tip the scale” in example (6) is translated into “小兵也会立大功” (a common soldier can also achieve great military merit) instead of the literal rendering “一粒稻米也能使天平倾斜”. This is a kind of free translation which focuses on the deep meaning of the source language and can make the verbal context more coherent. The “man” in the same example is translated into “不起眼的人” (unimportant person) in which “不起眼的” (unimportant) is a kind of semantic addition and seems to allude to Mulan. Free translation is also used in translating “She could be killed” and “hear our prayer: Watch over Mulan” in example (7), which are translated into “这可是欺君之罪啊” and “求求你们,保佑木兰吧” respectively. A literal rendering of “She could be killed” is “她可能被杀头”, but “这可是欺君之罪啊,” which means “this is the crime of deceiving the emperor,” is the more probable utterance in the very context that the film has constructed. Likewise, the literal rendering of “hear our prayer: Watch over Mulan” into “听听我们的祈祷:看护好木兰” is not what Chinese people would utter on that occasion. Instead, they would more probably say “求求你们,保佑木兰吧” (Beg you, please bless and protect
TThe 1999 autobiographical account, Is that you, Ruthie? by Ruth Hegarty provides an insightful portrayal of the harsh realities experienced by Indigenous Queenslanders, under the control of The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897 (Qld.). Hegartys’ account of the limited education of Indigenous Queenslanders living on reserves, highlights the intention for preordained employment outcomes governed by the 1897 Act. The Governor in Council was responsible for all matters pertaining to Indigenous Queenslanders (The Act 1897, s31.).
Hi, Wicliffe As always your writing is succinct and a pleasure to read. I think I used the words brevity and clarity to describe your previous writing assignments and they still apply. Your observation about how insulated America can be is one I have also noted. Most of us learn about cultures through the filter of movies, books, films etc.
David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” and Jonathan Franzen’s “Oh the Places You’ll Go” are commencement speeches at Kenyon College, delivered by amazing authors. Although Wallace and Franzen's speeches convey different perspectives and ideas, both speeches advise students with a significant message about life. To begin with, the differences between Wallace’s and Franzen’s speeches; one focuses on the purpose of education and the other on our infatuation with technology. In his speech, Wallace indicates the purpose of liberal arts education.
Lessons from the Culture Every year we see family emigrate to other countries, and they face many challenges. The stories “Sweet, Sour, and Resentful”, by Firoozeh Dumas, and from “Fish Cheeks”, by Amy Tan, share similar cultures and really interesting stories. Also, both families from the essay share several challenges that they are face when they move to the United States of America. The two families share many similarities; however, they differ in to keeping their culture, showing openness, and teaching a lesson from their culture to others.
Palaces already become symbols of strong power and royalty. From the East to the West, thousands of emperors marks a point of turn in history and leave the marvelous
Today, money has made many people believe that you need to have a lot of money to live a great, happy life. People in the world, especially the people who don’t have as much money as the ones that do, look up to people like popular idols, because they have money. People think they have a great living life with all the money they have earned during their lives. In the short story “Why You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes, the author uses diction, colloquialism and dialect to express the fact that just because people have the money to go out to eat somewhere expensive or buy the newest clothes, does not mean that a person is happy all the time and expresses how people in the town talks. Money is what makes the world goes round and everyone has come
There are many interpretations of what torture is and how something can be classified as torture. In “Believe Me It’s Torture” Christopher Hitchens talks about the United States and its various uses of interrogation tactics to get Important information from suspected terrorists. In the article the author often brings up the waterboarding tactic that is often used and how there is a large controversy over whether it is in fact torture or if it is just simply harmless. The article states, “waterboarding was something that Americans did to other Americans, it was inflicted upon and endured by the Special Forces in a form of training called S.E.R.E (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) so that they could build up a resistance to it so that they
The poem “One Boy Told Me” by Naomi Shihab Nye, was told by her son when he was two and three years of age. His comments, thoughts, and remarks were jotted down verbatim by Naomi and pieced together to create the one of a kind free verse poem. Nye assembled the phrases into individual stanza’s where they coherently flow to one another to illustrate the mind of a toddler. Wide ranges of emotions and personalities invoke the inner child and their curiosity. Overall, her son’s interpretations of his surroundings and understandings are represented in how the idioms expressed set the stage for intrusiveness, humor, and poetic devices to contribute to the overall meaning.
“Gentleman, Your Verdict”: A Moral Dilemma 1. In my opinion, I don’t think the jury should convict Commander Oram of murder because he wanted at least some people to survive and to do that, many men had to die. The fact that he commits suicide makes a difference because if he hadn’t it would have made it look like he killed 15 other men so that he could survive. If he hadn’t commit suicide, I would definitely change my answer to ‘yes, he is guilty’. I don’t think that the other crew members are guilty because they didn’t have a say in what was done.
In Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson concludes “the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice,” and by this he means that when there is no justice, most people will live in poverty, despair, and fear. Despair is the complete loss of all hope, and each of these characters felt that feeling. Bryan Stevenson was stopped and searched by the police, and he was full of fear because one officer had pulled a gun on him. Fear, Police rely on fear to break the law and do as they wish, because they know a majority of people are scared to go against the police. In chapter 3, Walter McMillian was in jail awaiting his trial and eventual execution, this alone drove him into a pit of despair.
In the novel “And Still We Rise: The Trials and Triumphs of Twelve Gifted Inner-City Students” written by Miles Corwin demonstrates how Inner City Los Angeles is not just full of gangbangers and drug dealers, but also full of success and diversity. Corwin, a reporter, spent a year at Crenshaw High School to document the lives of the students as they manage to fight the obstacles in Advanced Placement English, inside and outside of class. Toni Little, an AP English teachers, also struggles this year due to the fact of discrimination for being the only white teacher. Corwin also spent the year with another AP English teacher, Anita Moultrie, who is Little’s “nemesis.” After taking several beatings of discrimination from Moultrie, the school
In order to be accepted in the current social society, you must follow a certain set of norms throughout life. Social norms are the unwritten rules on behavior that are expected and established opinions on what is appropriate and what is not. People who do not follow these instilled norms may be casted aside, judged, or suffer a consequence. Society’s expectations have dictated what normal human behavior is that people conform to as a way of life. These norms, however, are not set in stone, so they may be challenged.
Charles Baxter’s book “There’s Something I Want You to Do” is composed of ten chapter, each focussing on one of the seven deadly sins and their vices. The chapter that stood out the most to me (and what this essay will focus on) was the first chapter, titled Bravery. Besides the fact it’s main character is a doctor which is what I’m going to school for, the emotions described in this chapter were very genuine. But, before getting into the specific contents of the chapter, the idea behind the seven deadly sins must first be understood.

Being in love is like an ocean; the further out one goes the deeper it becomes. In the poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” we get a sense of how deep and real her love is for her husband. Bradstreet gives us an insight to her and her husband’s relationship and how deep and strong their love has become. She uses hyperbole and biblical allusions to convey how great their love is.
