The Supreme’s are an, “American pop-soul vocal group whose tremendous popularity with a broad audience made its members among the most successful performers of the 1960s and the flagship act of Motown Records.” The members of the group were Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong. They were a Motown label’s primary crossover act and they helped change the public image of African Americans during the civil rights era. “It took a while to create the distinctive look and sound that ultimately made them famous. Gordy unsuccessfully paired the group with different musicians and songs for three years until he finally stumbled upon the right formula. In 1964 Holland-Dozier-Holland gave the Supremes their first number one single …show more content…
The performance was tapped as mentioned earlier in The Hollywood Palace on October 22nd 1966 (fun fact, I was born on October 22nd). The performance aired on October 29th 1966. They performed You Keep Me Hangin’ On, Somewhere from West Side Story, and What Now My Love with Herb Alpert and Gilbert Bécaud. The instrumentation in You Keep Me Hangin’ On includes guitar, drums, bass, trumpet and trombone. For Somewhere, it was a full orchestra that played in the background for them. I’m not sure if everything was pre recorded for them or if they had a live band behind the stage performing with them. Either way it was a wonderful performance, “Part of it was their glamorous image —the sparkly beaded and crystal-covered dresses, big hair turned up to eleven and their ballroom queen aesthetic, pushed by the marketing genius and Motown founder known as Berry Gordy Jr.” They had a large lift in the stage that revealed them as they strutted to the front of the stage. They had on sparkly tight dresses that when they danced the sparkle of the dress played with the reflection that the lights reflected back. They had a powerful stage presence, especially Diana …show more content…
It rose to be #1 on the US Billboards and also managed to be the top spot on the US R&B Singles Chart. The song was written and produced by Holland-Dozier Holland who was the producer of the group, later on the piece would also be put in the album The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland. The studio mix of the piece features more prominent and louder backing. Somewhere, like I said above, is from the musical West Side Story written by Leonard Bernstein. The Supremes recorded the piece in their album There’s A Place For Us. In their mix recording you can hear more of the instrumentation in the orchestra instead of a more prominent string section that is only accompanying. There’s also more unification in the rhythm between the singers. The way the live recording impacts you more is the way Diana Ross is more free about her rhythm and sings truly to her heart rather than just reading the notes and
Later after that first sell, it was resold to PolyGram in 1993. Gordy was no longer making records but he still had a hand in related projects to Motown. This would include a miniseries on TV and a Broadway musical. Motown was still successful in the 80's and 90's, some of their artists included Stevie Wonder, Queen Latifah, and Boyz II
Motown Records made an impact on the music industry because they developed sounds that were unique. The use of drums, tambourines, handclapping, drums, bass, keyboards, and brass instruments helped to define the “Motown Sound”. These instruments and sounds were perfected by The Funk Brothers, who were Motown’s in-house band and the envy of all competing recording companies.
The original lineup of the group featured lead baritone
This song dominated the charts, “The No. 1 R&B track, again co-written by King, relied on a pointed bass line and ethereal, tender vocals, reaching the Top 5 on the pop charts as well. ”(Clarence 5). With King’s vocals and lyrics, this song appealed to both genres and brought together two different music

While no other man can be said to have created rock and roll, Berry debatably did more than anyone else to put the pieces together. As rock journalist Dave Marsh wrote, “Chuck Berry is to rock and roll what Louis Armstrong is to jazz.” On “Maybellene” Berry’s first single, released in 1955 where he performed country &
After learning to play their instruments, The Monkees began releasing songs for use in their show as well as for general public listening. Fortunately for them, quite a few of these tracks grew popular, some of them even managing to make top charts. The Monkees started off strong with, “”Last Train to Clarksville,” their first single, [which] was a top ten hit” (Pendergast and Pendergast 854). As previously stated, this was likely due to the audience they had already built with the show. Other songs such as, “”Daydream Believer,” “Valerie,” “Girl,” and “I’m a Believer”” were also popular with fans (Pendergast and Pendergast 854).

Two of the biggest groups to separate themselves from the other bands of the 1960s were the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Each had their own style of rock ’n’ roll and their own way of creating new music. The Beatles had a very British pop style at the start, which morphed into their unique style of music as they blended and mixed it with different kinds of “world music.” The band worked together to write and develop their style, which was different from the Beach Boys “whose creative center was unquestionably one member of the group” (Starr & Waterman, 305) Brian Wilson. Through Wilson, the Beach Boys developed a surfin’ style of rock ’n’ roll and like the Beatles, Wilson liked to experiment with different instruments and effects to change their sound.
February 9th, 1964: The Beatles took the world by storm by making their debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show”. The popular rock group included John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They’ve changed the world with their music and became the best selling band in history. The Beatles are one of the most influential music groups impacting the world in more ways than one.
They changed the world of music repeatedly throughout their time together. They created the version of music videos we now have today, before they were short film performances of songs or original settings of songs that ended up in movies. The Beatles created the merge of the two creating the modern day version of music videos. Before The Beatles, an artist would release single songs one after the other and then after all the songs were all released a long-playing album would be released. The Beatles however were the first people to keep an entire album unheard until the release day and then expose it as a complete album.
