“You owe them two hundred dollars?” Ashleigh who is the main character in the fiction short story by Susan Pfeffer, has just been asked to steal two hundred dollars from her mom by her father. Her father said that he needed this money to pay off for a deal that he had already made. Ashleigh decided to take the money because her father made her feel special, she wouldn't want to let down her dad, and her father made it seem like they were just borrowing the money. The first reason she took the money is because her dad made her feel special before he asked. This is proven because in the text when Ashleigh says “But then Dad gave me roses or sang a song he’d written for me.Or maybe he moved two busses away. And I realized he still called me Ashes, where mom couldn't hear him to be annoyed. And that made me feel special all over again”(1). She wouldn't want to let down her dad because he really made it seem like he needed the money. He did this by telling her that he needed the money for some financing that could make him “set for life”(2). Ashleigh’s father also made her feel bad for him. He did this by saying that he also needed the money because he owed people money. She also felt bad for him because she knew that he could barely afford for the two of them to go out to diner. This is proven when Ashleigh says “can you afford it?” when they are talking about going to the new diner(2).It is also proven that Ashleigh wouldn't want to let down her dad when she says “he looked so happy I had to smile, too”(3). When this happened she knew that he really wanted to go through with this and if she didn't take the money he might be really upset or disappointed and in trouble because he didn't just need the money for him he also needed it because he owed other people
