Yu-Gi-Oh vs Magic the Gathering If you had played any trading card game before, you should have heard of Yu-Gi-Oh (YGO) or Magic the Gathering(MTG), since YGO and MTG are the two most famous trading card games ever. YGO is originated from a Japanese anime designed by Kazuki Takahashi in 1999, and MTG is designed by an American, Richard Garfield in 1993. They are similar but not identical in 3 aspects: popularity, deck size and structure, gameplay, and tournament. Yet they are largely different in the battle mechanism. Both YGO and MTG tournaments can be further divided into 2 main categories. In YGO, there are Tier 1 and Tier 2 tournaments. Tier 1 tournaments are designed for casual play and moderate rule enforcement; it focuses on making a friendly environment so players can enjoy the fun of playing YGO. Tier 2 tournaments are very formal and have the highest level of rules and penalty enforcement; it is designed to provide a fair platform for professional gamers to compete at the highest level. MTG also has 2 types of tournaments: Premier and Non-Premier. Premier tournaments are only run by the official, Wizards of the Coast, or selected tournament organizers. Others tournaments which are not Premier tournaments belonged to another category, Non-Premier tournaments. Additionally, MTG tournament has 2 tournament formats: Constructed and Limited. In Constructed tournaments, players compete using deck prepared beforehand, while, in Limited tournaments, players need to form their decks by using cards provided by the official during the tournaments.
