Leonidas Polk was born in April of 1806 and grew up in North Carolina. He came from a wealthy family (Leonidas Polk) who had a bloodline of generals in the Revolutionary War. Along with being tied to the University of North Carolina, his family also had connections at West Point Military Academy. Polk would later start his military career by joining West point, but would eventually become a pastor (HistoryNet).

Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was the first son of Jesse Root Grant, a tanner, and Hannah Simpson Grant. At age 17 Grant's father enrolled him in the United States Military Academy in West Point. An administrative error happened and changed his name. Originally his name was Hiram Ulysses Grant, but he was listed as Ulysses S. Grant.
After he was allowed to lead a company into combat, we was greatly credited for his bravery under fire. Also, he felt that the Mexican-American War was wrong and that it was only being fought to increase the slavery territory. After a 4 year engagement, he finally married Julia in 1848. He grew up in poverty since his father died before his birth, and he lived in an impoverished rural area near North and South Carolina. At the age of 14 he was orphaned due to his mother’s death from a disease contracted while taking care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Andrew Jackson studied law in his later teenage years in Salisbury, North Carolina, leading to his appointment as prosecuting attorney of western North Carolina. Additionally, Andrew Jackson was one of the first elected representatives for Tennessee in the United States House of Representatives.
Born on October 2, 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia, Nat Turner was born into slavery. He spent his entire life on Southampton County, where slaves made up most of the population. After interpreted signs that he got from God in 1831, he planned and led a riot against slave owners. He led a group of slaves on a slave rebellion, a rebellion more violent than any other rebellion led by a black person in history. Killing almost any white person seen or encountered, this uprising caused terror across the Southern United States.
As the first person in my family to attend college, I realized how privileged my life has been and how much higher education could make a difference to me and my family. Being excited, I embarked on a journey to improving writing, communication and critical thinking, and exploring innovative ideas for personal development and social values. This remarkable experience inspired me to pursue a Ph.D. My goal is to develop a better understanding of research and teaching, thus building a skill set to fulfill my aspiration while serving in the academic field.
