Many of us enjoy the outdoors and spending time with our families. It’s a nice day out you invite your friends over and start up the grill while the kids are at play in the yard. You enjoy some good food and company, that night you go in and realize you are covered in bites and so are your children. If your kids are anything like mine the bites swell up to the size of a half dollar. We all know it’s those pesky mosquitoes. But what many of us don’t think about is the disease that those tiny flying insects cause. We’ve all heard of West Nile, malaria, yellow fever and a few others that they carry, but the Zika virus is something new. The Zika Virus was first discovered in Uganda’s Zika forest in 1947 however; many of us have never heard of it until recently. Many of us are still unsure about the …show more content…
II. The symptoms may seem minuscule compared to the possible effects of this virus.
a. Some people infected show no symptoms, when others do.
1. Some symptoms attributed to the virus are conjunctivitis (pink eye), eye pain, headache, itching, joint pain, low-grade fever, and rash.
2. If infected the infection is likely to only last several days to a week.
b. (GBS) Guillain-Barre’ Syndrome is and uncommon sickness of the nervous system in which a person’s own immune system damage the nerve cells, causing muscle weakness, and sometimes paralysis ("Zika and Guillain-Barré Syndrome." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention., 14 Apr. 2016).
1. GBS is believed to be triggered by Zika in a small amount of infections. The CDC is investigating the link between zika and GBS.
c. The greatest concern with zika is Microcephaly.
1. Microcephaly is a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than that of a normal sized infants head. The severity can range from minimal to severally smaller. Because babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that aren’t developed
During the epidemic of the Salem Witch Trials, that took place during 1692, 19 people were sentenced to death. Even though this occurred many centuries ago, there are several examples of epidemics that occur in our society today. The Crucible and Zika virus ‘spreading explosively,’ WHO leader says are both examples of texts that clearly show the theme of epidemic. In The Crucible, there were many people that were accused and punished for witchcraft. In the article Zika virus, it talks about the Zika virus and how quick it’s spreading.
In the article Zika can damage the brains of even adults, by Megan Rosen she sheds her knowledge of how the disease can potentially cause more harm. The Zika epidemic has been rampaging America by mosquito vectors and is very dangerous to women. It is known to cause birth defects in the wombs of pregnant women that cause birth defects and intellectual impairments. Through new discovery though research, scientist believe the Zika virus can also kill stem cells. They also think that by killing stem cells it could also limit their number in adult brains.
The role of government to protect the health of pregnant women and their babies is by continuing to fund in the organization of contraception of Zika Virus such Planned Parenthood. By providing every pregnant woman in the organization, the fund will provide every pregnant woman or mother essentials needs to give their child a normal lifestyle. If the government continue to do so, it will help benefit those that are ill and prevent future pregnant women. This disease is preventable by educating everyone about what Zika virus is and can do to a body, wearing mosquito repellent and long pants, and travel places where there is no outbreak of

Mosquitos soon became resistant and the only approach was to use more chemical sprays. Deaths of many birds were due to bio magnification caused by the extraneous amounts of toxins in water. Suzuki acknowledges how his faith on “predictive
The use of antiviral medication reduce the duration and severity of pain Shingles are difficult to diagnose when they are in dormant stage, it means when the patient does not have a rash. Diagnose is usually made after clinical examination, rather than through virological testing (Shostak, & Conceicao, 2015), and can be seen in the symptoms of burning, tingling, numbness or pruritus, 1-4 days before the appearance of the mam
The plague infected and killed many people. Comparing this to the Zika virus, which is a modern event that is changing parts of the world, you can draw both similarities and differences. "Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, the same mosquitoes that spread Chikungunya and dengue. These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters and they can also bite at night. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite a person already infected with the virus.
In Awakenings, most of these patients were survivors of the epidemic, showing signs of multiple diseases. Encephalitis is discussed as being the inflammation of the brain; not the outer layering of the brain, called meningitis, but the brain itself (Davis, 1). With all that inflammation, it would be easy to analyze and see that those neurotransmitters would have a hard time doing their job, and getting the brain to send those signals to the rest of the body in order to function. No wonder symptoms of encephalitis such as stiffness in the body, confusion, memory loss, paralysis, and lack of responsiveness are complications (Davis, 4). Encephalitis is believed to be viral, and can come from simple things such as herpes simplex, also known as HSV (Davis, 2).
The clip that I chose to use is the case of the Zika virus. I am speaking on the 5 case of the Zika virus found in Miami. The Zika virus has arrived in the United States, with mosquitoes spreading the virus in two Miami-area neighborhoods and the CDC advising pregnant women to avoid those areas. Pregnant women who have traveled to the Wynwood area of Miami or a section of Miami Beach should see their doctor about getting tested, the CDC says. Pregnant women and their partners who live in the areas or must travel there should take steps to avoid mosquito bites.

Zika is a perfect example of how infectious diseases and agents can quickly spread throughout the world due to the ease of travel, and therefore poses a major public health threat. The public health goal is to now figure out how to stop the spread of Zika by possibly eliminating the reservoir and vector, the mosquito. Prevention of Zika also depends on educating at risk populations/geographical areas on the disease and how to avoid becoming infected. There are also a multitude of neglected tropical diseases in parts of the world that receive little attention and therefore little research to prevent mortality and
