regard to music by Michael Nyman. The movement of minimalism came about as a reaction against other music styles, primarily serialism which was based on the mathematical control of the musical elements.. This music style was an avant-garde by a group of American composers such as Michael Nyman and Tom Johnson. First of all, it was a form of experimental music called the New York Hypnotic School and later recognized as a popular experimental music style. It was mainly influenced by the minimalist art forms
1980: 325). This artistic movement has been shaped by a set of very distinctive ideas and aesthetics of music, which therefore distanced it from all previous eras and movements. In the following I will be drawing up these ideas and relate them to Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. I will furthermore elaborate on how Romanticism is seen as an aesthetic and music style within the western art music and the innovative way Berlioz approached the symphony, to how Beethoven influenced the symphony. Wayne Holder Professor Klepacki 10/23/15 Paper 2: Modern Composer My personal philosophy on the relationship between music and individual sounds is that they are interrelated. Sound encompasses such a vast range of things that it encompasses music too. Music is created by sounds carrying emotion. Similar to my belief Steve Reich has said “…you get a car crash, you record it on tape…But a car crash is a chilling, emotionally loaded event”(Reich). To me when Reich says this it implies that all sounds
The music Purple Modal Strobe Ecstasy with the Daughters of Destruction from All Night Flight composed by Terry Riley is entirely based on drone. The base sounds continue until the end of the song. The same low sounds are repeated and fixed during about 45 minutes long. In the beginning of the song, the piece seems like there in no definite change. Therefore, the unusual and confusing sounds make audience focus on the music waiting for the change. However, as song ends the introduction, the other

Steve Reich was one of the most influential composers in the minimalist genre. Even in recent decades, his repetitive keyboard figurations have been used in commercials for companies such as I.B.M. (Strickland, 1993, pg.1) Reich much prefers the term musique répétitive instead of minimalism as Reich was quoted saying, “Debussy resented ‘Impressionism’. Schoenberg preferred ‘pantonal’ to ‘atonal’ or ‘twelve-tone’ or ‘Expressionist’.” (Strickland, 1993, pg.23) Reich is well known for his tape-looping
arranged in 1919. Both of these pieces are coming from the 20th century modern music time. Arutiunian and Clarke had other great composers with them during this time like; Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Charles Ives, and George Gershwin. Each composer made an impression on the development of music to what it has advanced to
I attended the concert in Punta Gorda on October 19th at The Charlotte Performing Arts Center. The concert presented the Port Charlotte High School Wind Orchestra followed by Florida Gulf Coast University Wind Orchestra. FGCU’s wind orchestra was conducted by Dr. Rod Chesnutt. The first piece they played was Danse Bacchanale (1877) by Camille Saint-Sales from “Samson and Deliliah”. The final piece performed was Jug Blues and Fat Pickin (1986) by Don Freund. Early in the song, the Danse Bacchanale
used the characteristic scat singing, Holiday rarely sang the gibberish words and focused on the meaning of the song through her intense yet quiet voice. Despite the common Tin Pan Alley technique of plugging out songs simply to promote the sheet music, Holiday explored improvisation and made each song her own. Through her jazz improvisation, sincerity, and manipulation of phrasing, Billie Holiday created a revolutionary style of singing that many musicians copied in years to come. Holiday’s childhood

archaic neo-classical trend very strongly”(Vlad, 1958). Throughout this period, he simplified his music by taking away the ornaments, and getting rid of polyharmonic devices as well as polytonality. The Rakes Progress reaches the height of Stravinsky’s neoclassic era. In The Rakes Progress, Igor Stravinsky uses a combination of past musical tools, such as Mozart’s model for comic opera (A History of Western Music) and aspects from other composers, Cavatina Caboletta form and classic Recitative Aria form
categorized as the belief that objects and physical things can hold meaning and worth; meanwhile a nonmaterial culture would hold the opposite belief, which is that attachments cannot be embodied into a physical object. For example, someone can be a minimalist, meaning they do not hold attachments to objects such as clothes or electronics, compared to a materialistic person, who’s household is littered with small trinkets that supposedly hold memories or meanings. Subconsciously, with a world that is

At this moment in 2017, there are currently 1,538 different music genres. This is according to “an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space” called Every Noise at Once (McDonald, 2013). An engineer of The Echo Nest, the intelligence platform that is behind Spotify’s recommendation algorithms, created the interactive visualization of today’s “genre-space”. Spotify's use of algorithms is a far cry from flipping through physical albums, under a paper tag
History – 1990s Fashion and Music Title slide 1 Slide 2 The 1990s was a decade that saw change sweep across all aspects of Australian lifestyle. Edgar Allan Poe is known for his dark and gruesome writing, and his poem “A Dream Within a Dream” is not spared from this trend. The meaning of the poem reflects the title as within it the narrator is told by a parting lover that life is a dream, however the narrator is left questioning whether or not this is true after he parts from his lover. Edgar Allan Poe’s life was full of tragedy and heartbreak, becoming orphaned a year after he was born and then later losing his beloved wife shortly after
Dante has one, but Shakespere and Cervantes do not...we're talking about a direct descendant. To celebrate the 750 years since the birth of Italy's most famous poet, The Local set off to meet his great-great-great (you get the idea) grandson. Sperello di Sergio Algierei is his name and he hasn't spent much time dewlling on his family history. In fact, he has spent most of his life looking out of observatory domes at distant galaxies. He is an astronomer who is currently living and working at the
