1. Abstract: Magnesium is the lightest of all commonly used structural materials. It plays a central part in the manufacture and use of competing metal products. Global magnesium demand is forecast to see a compounded annual growth rate of 7.7% over the next five years. Traditionally magnesium is produced from dolomite and magnesite ore (Pidgeon process), as well as magnesium chloride containing salt brines (naturally occurring salt deposits).
