The Renaissance or Rebirth of the European cultural scene spanned the period between the fourteenth and the seventeenth century and it collectively refers to the collection of paintings, murals, sculptures and other works that were created as part of the revival of the classical past of Europe. During this period artists created various works and masterpieces including art, literature and learning ideas, which in turn gave Europe a new cultural foundation to begin with. The work created during this period had a very distinguished style influenced by the remnants of the Middle Ages. Italian artists and writers wanted to bring back the values, teachings and the civilized culture and tradition left by the Greco-Roman era.
A few researchers may believe that the sole reason why the Renaissance occurred in Italy was a result of the copious amount of money they had, but they would be dead-wrong because it was a culmination of factors that made Italy the ideal place for the Renaissance to begin. The term Renaissance or rinascita in Italian means rebirth, a rebirth of interest in the Classical civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance was not an event but a cultural movement that took span over a number of centuries, from around the 14th and 17th century. This period followed the medieval ages which was a period lacking in progress, society was hierarchically divided into classes and was greatly influenced by the church.
The Renaissance re-established Western art particularly that of Greek decent, such as sculpture and painting. Artists and thinkers of this time looked for ideals and influence of ancient Greece and Rome artists to create bigger and better pieces of work. Art was used as an escape and a sense of confidence. In the visual arts, according to the Italian Renaissance Art Encyclopedia, humanism stood for “ the development of people and figures, with advancements in realism, caused by increased availability to techniques such as linear perspective.
Renaissance took place about from the 13th century to the 16th century in Florence, it is a cornerstone for the future development of different aspects of Europe even the world. During the Renaissance, people not only traced back to the Romanesque but also developed a new era of art. Moreover, people emphasized rationality and balance of the artworks. The Renaissance can be divided into three periods which are Early Renaissance, High Renaissance and Late Renaissance. To start with, Early Renaissance is a period in which many techniques and thoughts about art were developed.

Following the years of devastation and turmoil from the Dark Ages, including the Black Plague and the constant decline of the Church was a period of rebirth and revival. This period was called the Renaissance, meaning rebirth, and indeed this point of history was fueled by the both the desire for exploration and innovation, and the surge of interest in learning. The Renaissance revived the flame of passion for learning Classical Greco- Roman scholarship and values. In addition to the revisiting of ancient Greek and Roman means of learning, new ways of thinking were introduced, and all forms of art, literature, mathematics, and sciences were in their prime. Several great minds flourished in this period of history.

Further the Duke was not an average Duke but also a professional military leader therefore it is likely he was extremely wealthy enabling this portrait to be created.
The Renaissance DBQ “Rebirth” is a general term that many historians use to define the European Renaissance. Lasting from approximately 1300-1700, the Renaissance was a period of great change that led to many inventions, advances and achievements. Significantly, during the Renaissance people focused on the humanist belief. Humanism is a belief with a central idea that people should live a meaningful life. This “meaningful life” focuses on philosophy, science, art, and education as a whole.
As the Age of Renaissance began to emerge, the old systems of feudalism began to weaken (Wolfe 4). Some of the beliefs behind Renaissance individuals included the notion that it was time to break free from past theories (1). This included a more secular approach to the studies of life, rather than past theologies or religious upbringings (1). One of the major reasons that led to broader interests of earthly pleasures, was due to the problems that arose within the Roman Church (1). Renaissance scholars were encouraged by the corruptions of the church to explore different avenues than previous medieval scholastics (2).
What were the ideals of the Renaissance, and how did Italian artists and writers reflect these ideals? The Renaissance was the most radical rebirth of art, learning, and literature throughout the 14th through 16th centuries. It sparked a change in the way people thought and brought forth multiple cultural and social revolutions. The Renaissance marked the conversion from an agricultural, medieval Europe to the urbanized, modern Europe in which is seen today.
Ex-votos inhabited in the Catholic church for sacrifices or offerings, and were placed in sanctuary of churches. This was problematic because many criticized they were forms of idols and idolatry. Many of the ex-votos that were given before the church were body parts or special possessions of the person who brought them forward. The critics of this practice claimed that “[God] wants our hearts and our minds; he does not go searching for images of wax” which is why they attempted to steer people away from this practice of offering wax pieces of the body to the church as a resemblance of offering it to God (Holmes 159). It also took up space within the sanctuary where people would go to practice their faith and worship God.

This style of art came to be during the late 14th century in Italy, it reached its zenith during the late 15th century and the early 16th century. Renaissance patrons wanted art that portrayed the beauties and pleasures of human life.
During our tour at the Legion of Honor, we observed art starting from the early and High Renaissance. Next, we went to the Dutch Baroque period, British art, and ended at the impressionists. A most notable work of art from the tour was “The Annunciation” by Master of the Retable of the Reyes Católicos. This oil on wood panel painting was created in the late 1500s, during the High Renaissance period of the art historical cannon. It portrays the biblical event found in the Gospel of Luke in which the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is pregnant with Jesus, the son of God.
There are multiple causes of the Italian Renaissance, both long term and proximate. The Crusades causing the renewal of trade were long term causes of the Renaissance. These increased the population and flow of people through Italy. The amount of influence the church held and the Bubonic Plague were more short term, as the church influenced the education system and lost control of politics, causing the change in direction of the common person’s concern as well as the Bubonic Plague causing people to leave their homes. The Crusades and increase in trade were long term causes of the Italian Renaissance.
The renaissance was a period in Italy that lasted 200 years. The era followed the middle ages, it was the era that brought fine art painting, sculpture and architecture centered on Italy, it was seen as the revival interest in the classical learning and values of ancient Greece and Rome. The Early renaissances (1401-1490) brought many great artists like Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Paolo Uccello and Piero Della Francesca. The Renaissance has a lot of ideas that has change the time. Without its ideas the Renaissance would have not happened. The Renaissance has many people in it but for example Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the many famous of the Renaissance. The Renaissance would have not start if these four things did not happen.
What exactly was the Renaissance? Well I’m glad you asked, the Renaissance was technically a ‘’rebirth’’ or ‘’revival’’ of art and literature, as some people would describe it as, and it had started in Europe around the year of 1400 and had lasted until about the 1700s. The Renaissance was a time of intellectual excitement, when art and literature blossomed and groundbreaking scientific advances were being made. During this period of time large parts of scientific and cultural advances were beginning to develop, and people were beginning to see themselves in a new way. The Renaissance changed man’s view of man in at least four areas: Art, Astronomy, Literature, and last but not least Human Anatomy.
