The Hero’s Journey in Into the Woods The world is an objective place. Yet, each person’s individual world is extremely subjective. Mythology gives life meaning; the way in which it affects each person depends on their views of the world. In the musical Into the Woods, the Baker and the Baker’s Wife go into the woods to complete their quest. The Baker is the hero, and his journey integrates those of several other fairy tales. Each fairy tale character in this show has their own reason to go into
clothes they wear, the activities do, the things they say, or the way they act, everybody participates in conformity on some level. The archetype of conformity is represented all throughout the short film, Destino, and the Broadway play, Sunday in the Park with George, by showing how one can stay true to themselves despite social norms, how one is forced to conform to social norms within society, and the struggle of attempting to remain true to oneself despite conformity around them. Georges-Pierre Seurat is a French artist. He was born on the 2nd of December, 1859 and died on the 29th of March, 1891. Seurat is considered to belong to the post-impressionism movement. People see him, like many of the great, well-known artists, as a combination of several traits and their opposites. He has a very high fine sensibility and at the same time high logical abstraction. Seurat is known for his innovative use of different painting media and techniques. He is the founder of pointillism
Impressionism's most celebrated masterpieces. The second painting is Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, which was created by George Seurat. George Seurat was one of the first avant-garde artists. Both paintings are actually images of a Sunday Afternoon. However, both of the artists used completely different paining techniques. The Bal du moulin de la Galette showed a typical scene of late 1800’s working class people, who on a Sunday afternoon, would dress up, dance, drink, and eat galettes.

These four musicals are West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Sunday in the Park with George. To examine both types of art methods, I choose an example of both kinds of artwork, which are displayed in the same organization, the Art Institute of Chicago. The first artwork is A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, by Georges Seurat in 1884, and features a systematic and “scientific” technique. The second is Day of the God, by Paul Gauguin in 1894, and utilizes
Sunday Sunday is a fascinating song whose subtext is interesting in that, on the surface, Sondheim’s lyrics in Sunday use color, shapes, and other such visual descriptions simply to hearken to the painting Seurat is creating. Yet Sondheim used these lyrics to convey the emotions of the characters, just as Georges Seurat used them in his painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Instead of directly describing feelings, Sondheim relays them in an Impressionist manner, giving the
characters George and Dot. This pas was the ultimate love story. It was full of passion, frustration and emotions. Initially I thought it was a story about a man and his relationship with the women he loved. Only to find out she was not his true love. The character of George’s mistress Dot was as emotional as he was. She forces him to look at what he does and why he does it, only to be frustrated with his obsession with his work. You hear this frustration in here voice in the scene where George briefly
Sondheim is known for the complexity of his lyricism and music. Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930 in New York City and began playing piano and organ at a young age as he was already practicing songwriting at the George School. He moved to Doylestown, Pennsylvania in 1942 and befriended the son of Broadway lyricist and producer Oscar Hammerstein II, who became his mentor and acted as a surrogate father to Sondheim during his parent’s tumultuous divorce. In the early
Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte: George Seurat, 1884 Georges Seurat, was born in 1859 and died at the age of 32. He was a very young French artist who revolutionized the art world. The artists of his time were typically impressionists, but this young artist used what is now referred to as pointillism or divisionism, by using tiny dots and strokes. Company, a concept musical, allowed for a whole new kind of musical to break through. Sunday in the Park with George brought a complexity to musical composition that had not heretofore been explored through its pointillist style. Sweeney Todd and A Little Night Music especially, normalized the musical/opera hybrid that can be seen in many of the popular

Past Times portrays African Americans, dressed in all white, of all ages and genders participating in various activities such as bike riding, swimming, and eating while at the park, similarly Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte depicts the same image with Caucasian subjects instead. From dawn to dusk, I enjoyed the good life to the hilt in a new neighborhood called the Sunset District. The best part where we lived was Kezar Stadium, the home of the 49ers, located just about two miles away. And when the 49ers played at home on Sundays, the noise from the crowd was like music to a budding 49ers fan. After Dad returned home from the war, he and Mom bought a two story Doelger home on 25th Ave for $6,000, a real bargain in those days. The houses were built right next to one another
