Steffirah Eliscar Summer Reading Entry #1 5 August 2015 After reading the first couple of pages in Our Town by Thornton Wilder, I must say that I am not particularly impressed. The first act is filled with descriptions of the town. The stage manager provides the audience with unnecessary details such as anthropological data, and the population of the town. This play does not seem to have a plot or storyline. It just depicts what the characters are doing at the moment. From what I understand
about, the common theme of the affect of love. The four texts I studied are; The Fault In Our Stars directed by Josh Boone, Heavenly Creatures directed by Peter Jackson, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Dustbins written by Witi Ihimaera. I will write about the texts separately and then make my connections. The Fault In Our Stars directed by Josh Boone, is about the development of a relationship between two teenagers, who battle with cancer. In the story you can see how their
“ Women, like men, should try to do the impossible, and when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.”- Amelia Earhart. The book “The Whale Rider” by Witi Ihimaera is about a girl named Kahu and is in line to becoming chief in her tribe but greatly discouraged by her grandfather Koro Apriana because she is a girl. Then she proves her grandfather by her ability to do things many boys in her tribe cannot do. I chose this quote because this book in many ways shows female empowerment
Whale Rider, a film based on the book written by Witi Ihimaera, is an extraordinary film to watch. In a coastal village inhabited by a native tribe called the Maori who claim to be descent from the Whale Rider Paikea. is on the plane heading towards America. She states,” When the plane takes off, I try to stay calm, to take deep, slow breaths like father does when he is practicing yoga” (583).” She is trying to calm herself as she makes her way to her new home. Witi also expresses this theme in “The Whale”. The village that is depicted in the story is almost gone along with many of its traditions. Many of the younger generation who has grown up there are living as they become older and not coming back. The old

The Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera is about a girl named Kahu who is discriminated for being a female. She is meant to be chief but her grandfather Koro Apirana doesn’t want to accept her, because it would be against their tribe’s beliefs. In the book, Kahu and other women show many ways of determination to prove she’s worthy of being chief. Female can play a big role in society for many reasons. For example in The Whale Rider, Kahu was able to do something no other boy could do. “She showed the
at the end, and I believe that this was only made possible by the the author’s decision to use a parallel storyline which was very effective in telling this particular story. This style of writing reminded myself of Witi Ihimaera, who is the author of the novel “Whale Rider.” Ihimaera also uses parallel storyline in this novel, but with whales and humans. This style of writing suits both books very well, because the main purpose of both these books are to compare and contrast two different
target that must be achieved, which is destiny. Going against society to fulfill destiny is impossible for a little girl but with the the help of another character, they can make the impossible possible. In the book Whale Rider written by Witi Ihimaera, we will see how a girl goes against traditional thinking and achieving her destiny. A person’s success could never leave the support of a companion and the strong determination of herself. In the book, Nanny Flower takes the role of Kahu’s
Whale Rider Based on the novel written by Witi Ihimaera, Whale Rider, directed by Niki Caro, tells the story of the 1000-year-old Maori legend of Paikea, their first ancestor who rode on the back of a whale to New Zealand. Reputation and self-image are crucial in an individual’s life. A person's external expectations of you are what they expect you to do and who they expect you to be. Your internal expectations are goals and standards you set up for yourself. The way others view you can affect the way you view yourself which might cause a shift in your life. In some cases, especially in the novels The Diary of a Part Time Indian, The Whale Rider and Like Water for Chocolate , internal and external expectations shape
