“But before Norway had inaugurated its main national theatre in Christiania (now Oslo) ninety years ago, it had already given the world the greatest playwrights of the age, Henrik Ibsen, and – in a Nordic perspective – the eminent Bjornstjerne Bjornson, who was also internationally renowned as a prose writer and peace campaigner. It is remarkable that from a country with such meagre theatrical traditions should come two dramatists who so strongly influenced the art of the theatre in the second half of the 19th century.”
