- “Two found poems, ‘The Last Words of Louis Riel’ by John Robert Colombo and ‘Found Poem: Louis Riel Addresses the Jury’ by Raymond Souster, evoke strikingly different images of Louis Riel. Although both poems are taken almost verbatim from the two speeches Riel gave during his trial, before and after the verdict was delivered, selective editing by the poets produces quite disparate constructions of Riel. Colombo sees him as a religious, pious man, truly the prophet Riel claimed to be. Souster, however, downplays Riel’s religious aspect and instead portrays him as a political leader of the Metis, victimized by Macdonald’s government. How have two images of Riel emerged from the poets’ reproduction of the same found evidence?”
