- First Descents Into The Inferno: Parallel Ideology And Experience In Conrad’s ‘Heart Of Darkness’ And Dostoevsky’s Notes From The House Of The Dead
- http://www.otago.ac.nz/DeepSouth/vol2no2/descent.html
- “Siberia and Africa were, ultimately, perhaps the most important emotional and spiritual experiences in the personal lives of both writers. These private descents into the veritable hell of the human psyche were to exert a profoundly shaping influence in the later formation of both men’s mature philosophies. The semi-fictionalized accounts of each writer’s harrowing psychological odyssey, therefore, deserve to berecognized as major first statements of their creed. As I have shown, a parallel analysis of Heart of Darkness (1899) and The House of the Dead (1860), from this perspective, does provide some revealing insights into the strikingly similar nature of both author’s views on the human condition.”
