- A Key to the Lock
- http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~sconstan/keylock.html
- “Written in 1715 by Pope (using the pseudonym Esdras Barnivelt), this humorous interpretation of The Rape of the Lock serves as a warning to critics not to take the poem too seriously. In the Key Pope exposes his own poem as a dangerous political allegory (Belinda represents Great Britain, the Lock represents the Barrier Treaty…). The Key alsoshows Pope trying to placate Sir George Brown (the original for Sir Plume, Sir George was none too happy with the role he played in the poem) by indicating there were at least two possible originals for Sir Plume. “

- To the Victor Goes the Spoils: Pope’s Ideology of Violation in “The Rape of the Lock”
- “Pope’s ‘The Rape of the Lock’ creates a dilemma for readers and critics alike. While it is an enduring work of art, encompassing mastery of the heroic couplet with humor and insight, it nonetheless inscribes an ideology of violation. Pope’s masterpiece, while on one level sympathetic toward the lack of women’s opportunities in a patriarchal society, on the other, perpetuates the commodification of women and, in doing so, violates the reader as well, by including the reader as an implied accomplice to the rhetoric of misogyny.”
