Serial, a weekly podcast, revisits the 1999 murder case of Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, and her former boyfriend convicted of the crime, Adnan Syed. In the United States, the law says that someone is innocent until proven guilty and with certain evidence presented in the podcast, Adnan is far from guilty. Serial brings to light new evidence that could answer the question of Adnan Syed’s wrongful imprisonment. With the inconsistency of Jay Wilds incriminating testimony, the irrational judgments by the police based on behavior and the possibility of the involvement of corrupt detectives, newly gathered evidence could prove that Adnan Syed is innocent.
In an unexpected visit to Jay Wilds, Koenig and her assistant, Julie, attempt to get a clearer understanding of the case because “No one else knows what you know about this whole case.” (Source F) As the prosecution’s key witness against

They were supposedly such good friends. Hae’s friend Aisha said that she was paging her like crazy.” (Source A) This behavior exhibited by Adnan at the time of Hae's disappearance cannot determine whether Adnan is guilty of the crime, however many try to link the two together. This is like saying because someone didn’t cry at a funeral, they killed the person. Unlike Hae's other friends and family, who were constantly attempting to contact her, Adnan didn't respond in the same way and just acted nonchalantly and tried to avoid the police. The police say that he didn't attempt to contact Hae because he already knew where she was—lying dead in a shallow grave. However, Adnan assumed—along with others—that Hae was in California with her father. If this was a sign of his guilt, then Hae's current boyfriend of that time, Don, would also be guilty because he also didn’t page her after she’d gone
There is motive as to why Adnan would kill Hae. Adnan bended his religion by dating Hae and having sex with her. He had given up a lot to be with her. When Hae broke up with him, it gives him motive to kill her because he was so angry for giving up so much. In episode 2 of the podcast, one of Adnan’s teachers said that his poetry was dark, and she hasn’t seen writing like that from other students.
Murder Case Against Adnan Syed In 1999, a murder case spiked the enthusiasm of the community of Baltimore, Maryland. Hae Min Lee was the victim of this unforgettable murder which brought together three main suspects: Adnan Syed, Jay Wilds, and Don; however, Don and Hae had only been together thirteen days prior to the murder. This rose suspicion in the case but for some reason was not analyzed as much as it should have been. Don did not have a solid alibi during that day, but he was thrown out the window.
Jay provides a plethora of information for the state that is just credible enough to ensure that Adnan would be convicted and not himself. Jay protecting himself in court is why Adnan receives such an unfair
There is no direct proof that Adnan killed her, and Jay is the only person who has a timeline. Instead of accusing Adnan of killing Hae, maybe everyone should be accusing someone
When Adnan was in Hae'a car, he found a priority chance to strangle Hae, and then he called jay drive to school picking up him and buried Hae's body. After that, they went to Cathy's home. In Adnan's testimony, he stated that he did not stay with jay at that time because he was going to buy a birth day gift to jay's girl-friend, Sephanie. The star witness, Jay proofed that Adnan showed Hae's body to him and they buried the body. The opposing view of Adnan was murder said that Jay's testimony had changed several times, his story was incredible.
On January 13, 1999, 18 year old Hae Min Lee, was reported missing after she left Woodland high school in Baltimore, Maryland. Hae was suppose to pick up her little cousin after school that day but had never showed, and that’s went her parents got suspicious. She was then found about a month later, buried in Leakin Park, a few miles away from the last place she was seen. Approximately six weeks after Hae went missing, a boy named Adnan Syed, an ex boyfriend of Hae’s, was arrested for her murder. To this day Hae Min Lee’s case has sparked many unanswered questions, and has rounded up many accusations.
“ Okay, so no one actually testified at trial that they saw Hae and Adnan leave school together.” So nobody saw them leave together, that’s some evidence that Adnan didn’t kill Hae. Also some people said “They’re still friendly; several people said they couldn’t tell or didn’t know that Hae and Adnan broke up.” so basically they were still pretty close after their breakup so honestly there is no motive that Adnan would have used to kill Hae. (S1.ep2.pg.40),
They never used his alibi Asia, stating that he was in the library during the time of the murder. The DNA found on Haes Lee's body was never tested, because it cost to much to do so. The lack of evidence was a big issue with the case. Looking back the only thing the state had on Adnan was Jay's stories. Jay is not a very reliable source.
On January 13th, 1999 Hae Min Lee disappeared. Somewhere between 2:15 and 2:36 p.m. that day she was murdered. Four weeks later on February 9th, 1999 her body was found at Leakin Park. On February 28th, 1999 Adnan Masud Syed, Hae’s ex-boyfriend, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. However since his arrest Adnan has maintained his innocence and insists he had no involvement whatsoever in Hae Lee’s murder.
These people say that since Hae broke up with Adnan and that was enough reason to want her dead. However, Adnan was a smart kid who would realize that killing someone for breaking up with you is not a valid reason. Adnan was not hurt enough to kill Hae; he was devastated when she died and he didn't know about it when he was told. Also, they say that Adnan had enough time to kill Hae. What this opinion fails to take into account is that Asia saw Adnan at the library around the same time of the murder and she was never used in court as an alibi (Koenig, “The Best Defense is a Good Defense”).
Anya Schultz, the author of a review titled Serial: A Captivating New Podcast, works to show how multiple narratives and stories can be manipulated and sometimes vastly misinterpreted. Serial, an intriguing, enthralling podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig, tells the story of Hae Min Lee, a young, beautiful, high school senior who was murdered in 1999. Lee 's case, as Koenig and Schultz point out, has a few missing pieces of information that were never accounted for. For example, how did the jury come to the conclusion that Lee 's ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was truly guilty? Why did Syed 's lawyer forget to mention the letter from his acquaintance Asia McClain that could have polished his alibi?
She missed Asia’s alibi which would have helped prove Adnan’s innocence. Throughout all of this Adnan has maintained that he had nothing to do with the murder of Hae Min
Adnan claims that this one butt-dial call should not ensure a conviction. Nisha stated she didn’t have a voicemail and she tried to recall. Whoever had Adnan's phone could've pocket-dialed Nisha and have left a two-minute voicemail. Adnan calls log on the day when Hae disappeared determines that Adnan was with Jay and his call to Nisha was intentional.
Adnan killed Hae because of his jealousy with Hae dating other guys. When Aisha mentions that Adnan “ was very possessive of Hae because he didn’t like Hae talking to other guys “ When Aisha also says “ Adnan was upset when Hae started dating Don and that he wasn’t taking it well “ ( Serial podcast Eps 2, Sarah Koenig ) this shows that Adnan could of also killed Hae because of how possessive and jealous he was of Hae talking to and dating other guys. Adnan was very upset Hae was dating another guy after the break up, which could of got him angry and which could have been why he has been accused of killing
This story alone ultimately convicted Adnan. No physical evidence was ever found. Reporter Sarah Koenig realized the patchy story of this case
