There is a saying ‘Rome was not built in a day’; this expresses the idea that great things take time to evolve and grow properly. America is much like Rome in the sense that over time and thanks to the foreign influences America received, it was able to blossom and still continues to grow. Without the intervention of France and England in America’s land and politics during 1795 to 1810, America would not have been able to thrive on the harsh global scale. Specifically, the political, social and economic events of the XYZ Affair, Alien and Sedition Acts, Louisiana Purchase and the despised Embargo of 1807 became turning points which would decide if America was strong enough to survive as a country. Firstly, the XYZ Affair was a political and …show more content…
The Jeffersonians supported the French and the Federalists supported the English. The British -loving Federalists wishing to seek control of their country passed the Alien and Sedition Acts. John Adams, a Federalist president had taken advantage of his position by using these against the Jeffersonians who supported the French.. The Alien Act meant to deport, arrest, and imprison any foreigner or immigrant. This had hurt the Jeffersonians because the majority of Jeffersonian supporters were of the poorer classes who came to America in search of a better life for themselves. Federalists carefully chose their words with this law, because every single colonist could technically be considered an immigrant leaving only the Native Americans to be the only true inhabitants. The Sedition Act was soon instituted and would jail any said person who impedes government policies. This Act was specifically targeted at newspapers, but was easily recognized as a violation of the first amendment which allows for the freedom of speech and press. These two laws segregated the Federalists of America and the Democratic-Republicans. In other words, the country was distinctly divided between pro-French or pro-English. America was a bargaining chip used between the French and the English. Basically, if the country was mostly French, then they would be the ‘winners’. The Americans believe this to be an issue within it’s own country, but it was more than that. This historical was a silent power struggle between France and England and is considered to be affected by outside foreign affairs, but in a more salutary neglect or hands off type of way. By supporting one countries viewpoints and policies over another, was affiliated with your political views, represented economic status and was sometimes associated with one’s character, although, few ever took it
Since the British settled in Philadelphia, colonists settled 15 miles northwest of it in a place called Valley Forge. It was cold and riddled in disease, but Washington was able to train troops and men were still patriotic. If I was at Valley Forge, I would be one of the people to stay there. One reason I would stay is because there wasn’t that many deaths in the first place (Doc A). The high amount of people there contributed to not a lot of deaths.
On August 29, 1911 Ishi, the last walked on the Sierra wilderness and into American culture. Ishi was treated less as a human-being, as his name was slandered by the San Francisco Call Article, which was not agreeable. This article describe Ishi by stating “with an assumption of stern dignity, yet trembling from burnoff hair to bare feet, the last of the cavemen took his seat among the crimson plush draperies and the glittering electric lights of the large box.”(San Francisco Call, Ishi Calls the Orpheum, The Heaven of the White People, Doc 4) That statement that the author, Grant Wallace made in some way tried to destroy Ishi humanity, which is to do to another human being.
Mansa Musa set off on his hajj and traveled thousands of miles through deserts, and strange cities to get to Mecca. Although this was a very religious journey, was this pilgrimage really all for religious purposes? Religion may have been a large motivating factor for this trip, but Mansa Musa did not journey on his hajj just for religious purposes. There were many other motivating factors for why Mansa Musa took this journey. Some motives were to set up better trade for the future, and gain popularity for his kingdom Mali and himself.
While on the other corner of the ring, the Federalists believed that the newly founded country would run best if the national government was strong and powerful and in effect if the Constitution was loosely interpreted. This started a series of issues between the two opposing sides with the Federalists pretty much winning every issue. From the issue of funding the war debt, whether a bank of America should be created, to the Alien and Sedition Act; the two sides did not see eye to eye. However, when Jefferson became president, it could be argued that the same abuse of power that he criticized the Federalists to have done could be argued against his own presidency. It is more than fair to say that Jefferson was a hypocrite not only from a Federalist standpoint but also from the
in 1798 the alien and seditions acts were signed into law by present John Adams in responce to fears of an impending war with France. These acts consisting of our four laws passed by the federalist controlled congress , increace the residency requirement for america citzizen to 14 years , authorized the present to imprison or deport aliens considered dangerous to the peace and safety to the united states and restricted speech critcal of the government. while the federalist led by Alexander Hamilton and Adams aruged that these laws were past to protect the united states from foregin invaders and propagandists , demdcratic republicans led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison , saw the alien and sedtion acts as a direct threat to individual liberty and the first amendment by a tyrannical government . the aliens and sedition acts were fiercely debatted in the press. which was overtly partisan at the time many editors of demoeratic republicans sponsored newspapers venemently opposed the new laws in particular the sedition act which made speaking openly againt the goverment a crime of libel punishable by fine and dissent by prosecuting those who violated the sedition act to the fullest extend of yhe law.
As the execution of King Louis XVI prompted the Reign of Terror, Federalists believed that the French fought immorally and corruptly. Therefore, we believed that any encouragement to the French would have demolished America because the revolution became anarchy. Once the French sparked war with Great Britain, the Americans had a commitment, under the Treaty of Alliance, to aid the French in the
In times of fear and hysteria in the U.S. it is mass chaos and it only gets worse and worse. During the time of both the witch-hunt eras, whether for communist or actual witches, they prove to have many similarities between them. Both of these times were full of confusion and lying which lead to the temporary downfall of the authority at that time. Joseph McCarthy proved to be a factor in this time and add on to the chaos that was America. Arthur Miller wrote about these times in a book called The Crucible, based on the witch trial era.
Corporate greedy and corrupt politicians were specific problems and injustices that were present in American life during the late 1800s and early 1900s however these were addressed during the progressive era with laws and regulations. Throughout the gilded era corrupt politicians and corporate greedy allowed the upper class and businessmen to take advantage of the working class. This means that a majority of the population were hurt during the gilded age whereas a small percentage benefitted. As seen in document 1, living conditions were crowded, dirty, and unsafe.
Valley Forge, The Winter Camp of Death and Illness If I were a soldier back in the 1700 and had duties in Valley Forge, I would quit and leave. Valley Forge was a winter camp that soldiers had to stay in. I have many evidences that I would quit Valley Forge. One evidence that I would quit is from Document A.
During the nineteenth century, Manchester,England was leading in textile manufacturing due to the cotton mill and it being the first industrialized city. The industrial growth increased the population to over 300,000 by a span of 100 years, this new increase was due to working class and immigrants. In document 1, there is a vast growth in the city of Manchester over the span of 100 years. Manchester was given representation in Parliament and the middle-class men received the vote. While the growth of industry was needed in Manchester for better development of modern society, it came with many issues.
Before the 20th century the United States was an isolationist nation but around the late 19th century America decided to convert into an imperialist power. They had numerous reasons to shift into being an imperialist nation. America didn’t want to begin imperializing to settle and live in the nations they were taking over, they already had America for that reason, they wanted to adopt these nations for what they had to offer, which was many things. America saw an opportunity to improving their nation and took it. Even if there were many causes for America to imperialize, three of them stood out the most.
After the Seven Year War, or the French and Indian War from 1754-1763, the Americas were more joined than any other time in recent memory. With the marking of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the British provinces interestingly, effectively guarded trespassers from their new countries. This brought an inconceivable feeling of solidarity between provinces, having won for Mother England. Be that as it may, inside around couple of years, the provinces requested their common conceived rights and opposed England. The marking of the Declaration of Independence, the states went from longing for solid relations with their European counter accomplices, to giving up their lives on the war zone for finish freedom.
At the start of the 19th century, America was already expanding its territory. In 1803, the United States of America had bought the Louisiana Territory, it was bought from France which had made the country two times larger. In 1819 Spain had given up their territory of Florida to the United States. President Monroe issued the “Monroe Doctrine” in 1823, its main purpose was to warn the European countries to not enter the Western Hemisphere. In order for America to achieve its goal of becoming an imperialist nation they had conquered other countries economically, culturally, and with a strong military in the late 1800’s.
When World War II ended, the United States rejoiced with what they assumed their victory would determine; total peace, the discontinuation of Communism, the return of all the dearly missed soldiers, and greater equality for all, especially in the workplace. Much to the dismay of many citizens at home during the war, these aspirations were not exactly what they expected. In the near short years right after the war, there was much prosperity and many were perfectly content, but in these years, many had difficult times with the changes that occurred after the war. With these rough times came many fears of the conditions of the country, but many of these fears were greatly calmed through the work of the President Eisenhower in the 1950s. In the
The people of America (colonists) were tired of being controlled by England. They wanted to be free and independent. They believed that they were able to control themselves and be their own country. They wanted England to let go of their control and to view them as independent and their own country.
